Any discussion about Wiegman taking the men's team job is pointless anyway.

The FA will either promote Lee Carsley from the U21s or (most likely) an media darling ex-England player with "Premier League experience".

It'll be Frank Lampard, IMO.

I like how we're discussing the potential of replacing bi-annual bottler in Southgate with someone who, checks notes, just lost in a final an hour ago.

You’re right. She’s got a way to go before she reaches Southgate’s record of choking. Too inexperienced.

Has to be Lampard for me. He has a proven track record of making teams less then the sum of their parts and that is the core role of an England manager.

Same FA appoints both but can only get it right in the women's game.

Would take Sarina over Southgate any day of the week, she changed it at half time and we looked so much better for it. Southgate changed nothing and we slept walk to a loss against France.
She has been amazing both with England and Holland but I'd say the opposite from today's game, thought she got it wrong. Walsh and Toone were anonymous all game and needed hooking, instead she took off our main goal threat in Russo leaving us pretty toothless 2nd half.

Perhaps the decision makers within the FA are different for the men's and women's game.

But whatever decision they make for Southgate's replacement, it's unlikely to be an exciting or thinking outside of the box one anyway. For all peoples moaning about Southgate, the FA seem more than happy with him and its highly likely his replacement will be more of the same IMO (i.e. cheap, available, ex-England player who is liked by the media).

Fair result. Should have really been more. Played England off the park at times.

It was a valiant effort but Spain were far better. Bronze looked well off the pace, Toone was anonymous and Walsh was an outright liability. Lauren James didn't really make any impression either, for all the hype.

Feel bad for Earps as she was terrific, as was Greenwood (vastly underrated player) and Jess Carter had another solid game - but it wasn't enough. Hemp started promisingly but eventually ran out of steam and England's threat seemed to die around the same point.
James came so close to equalising, good reactions by the keeper. She looked a level above the rest but Spain just surrounded her.

England did themselves no favours by not passing well enough in the final third, though Spain defended brilliantly.

I thought Carter was brilliant in defence, and Mary Earps kept us in it with the penalty save. Good effort by the Lionesses but not quite good enough.

My issue is not with the FA, or who makes the decisions, or whether Southgate is liked or is even good, or what their recruitment strategy.

It's simply whatever the recruitment strategy is literally no one will have Sarina at the top of their list for replacing Southgate when the day actually comes.

It's simply that recency-bias that a good, hope-filled tournament that everyone makes ridiculous statements. And the goes to battle to die on that hill 😃

Spot on. Hooking Russo at the break was bizarre.

I'm not advocating Sarina being the next England men's team manager personally. But she probably wouldn't do much worse than whoever the FA do choose to succeed Southgate.

It's difficult to predict how she would do managing the men's team, as it would be completely new territory really. Though I can hardly blame some people for wanting to gamble on an unknown quantity rather than a predictable failure like Lampard or whatever unemployed former England player the FA do end up appointing.

I think Sarina would be better off staying with the England women's team anyway. More chance of success there and she's better off swerving all the media nastiness and "culture wars" bollocks that would come her way as soon as she loses a game with the men's side.

There was one moment in the game between Russo coming off and England coming on where I think it was Bronze who hit a good first time cross only for nobody to make the run.

If there was a moment where maybe, maybe they'd have got back into it that would have been it.

But seeing how many chances Spain squandered, in reality it could have been much worse for England.

Spain bossed much of the game. I think Wiegman got her first half wrong. Spain's technical game, as I stated days ago, is by far the best of any side. They kept teh ball at will in half one. When England switched to four in the back it was a more equitable match, but ultimately England created little in Spain's back third. If Hermoso had put away the PK, it would have been game over. BonMati far and away the best player---she's a real treat to watch. I thought Bronze had a shocker, considering she is supposed to be the best fullback in the game. But I think the best team won, ultimately. A real advertisement for technical possession soccer, it was. And a very enjoyable final to watch.

I think Lucy Bronze is simply past her best. Nothing to be ashamed of and it happens to every player eventually - and she's been a terrific fullback for England for years now but I'd say her time is coming to an end.

Not really sure who'd come into replace her mind - though I only watch the WSL sporadically so my knowledge of who's up and coming isn't the best.

Why are they so ridiculous? She's a fantastic manager

Obviously no-one serious is actually genuinely considering Weigman for the England men's job. They are just winding you up.

I have no objection to women crossing into the men's game, but the women's game is not developed to anywhere the same level of men's and thinking that doesn't matter shows a poor lack of understanding of leadership.
I did love how much sauce Redemption was on today

This particular section I found extremely amusing

A poor lack of understanding indeed

Can we now move on - we were simply just not good enough.
