Where we were as a club when Marinakis took over

I was just flicking through youtube and found highlights of Notts County vs Forest from July 2017, and was racking my brains for who these players in red were.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypfn0HzZ1Go

Got me thinking, from year 1 of the five year plan, who still plays for us from then? And how far have we come?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017–18_Nottingham_Forest_F.C._season

From the first team, looks like it's Smudge, Wozza, Yates, Mighten, plus Figs, Jack Colback and Lolleh (though they arrived during that season) and there are a few still just outside the team who would have been academy players then

In a squad that over this season featured the likes of Matty Fryatt, Michael Mancienne, Armand Traore, Zach Clough, Barrie McKay, Liam Bridcutt and Jason Cummings managed by Mark Warburton and then Aitor Karanka we managed to beat Newcastle and Arsenal.

We had just sold the previous top scorer and star striker Britt Assombalonga for 15 million to championship rivals Middlesbrough. The approach to signings seemed to be initally Warb's ideas and then later Karankas, and mostly rubbish with the odd exception such as Dowell, Lolley, Colback, Figs, maybe Tomlin and eventually Watson

Kieran Dowell was our top scorer (with 10) and Ben Osborn our player of the season. We finished 17th, 12 points off the relegation zone. We failed to beat Derby this season, losing 2-0 at the pride park and drawing at the city ground.

Presumably not Mighten. That season was 16-17 and he was born April 2002 meaning he'd only just be 15 at the end of it.

Didn't Traore have dreads? And Pereira though he was the year before.

There's some value (at current value) in that side. Cash (nearly 20m), Brereton (14.4m), Bouch (4.5m), Worrall (4m), Osborn (2.25m) - crazy to consider honestly

A fair old selection of tripe as well. I'm glad this year EM has seen the error of his ways with regards recruitment, helped of course by surrounding himself with people who know what they're doing.

Unfortunately over the last 5 years we have recruited so badly you could probably name 4 sets of XI of terrible signings we've made during that time, many of which never even make a single appearance and if I'm sceptical probably never actually set foot in the country. To say the transfer dealings in the past 5 years has been poor would be an understatement. Its been so bad at times you wonder if something untoward is going on...

I just find it amusing that it’s taken 5 years for salty opposition fans to start throwing mud at him. They seemed quite happy when there was no success.

besides considering players in/out, there should be at some point of time a good report/evaluation of the club's general position in terms of finance, facilities, off pitch staffing, marketing, ticketing etc.

that would be interesting because the things out of sight sometimes are those that take the most time and effort and people usually overlook.

it's important to know always that if an owner leaves (which is not the case at all here) then the club is in better position than when he got in

I just hope the big man continues to realise that we need to run like an English club not like ones from the continent.

He made a lot of mistakes in thinking show pony's could cut it in a man's league both on the pitch, in the dugout and in the posh seats. Even if he were in it for the profit (I don't think he is) if he sticks to the plan he should make a bit of cash when he finally decides to call time on his ownership.

Everything will need to be stepped up, it’s not a cliche to say it’s a whole new league
Apart from the ticket office, that’s fine as it is.

I just watched the video from Copa90 from around the time we played Leeds under Lamouchi.

It's crazy how much things have changed since then but also kind of not.

To be fair if you look at the 5 years prior to that (and maybe before that too) you could say the same.
I suspect it happens at most other clubs as well, we just don't know about it.
