John Fashanu wrecked Gary Mabbutts face with a deliberate elbow, IIRC. must me late 80's/early 90's

Fat Gazza in the cup final. Still get angry when I see highlights of that. First assault should've been a red. Probably would've extended his career as he did his cruciate in the second one

Oh, and didn't Big Duncan Ferguson get some jail time for something up in Scotland?

vague memories and CBA looking them up

Don't think I've seen this one, although Souness really could have a highlights reel all of his own ultraviolence

The chap on the other end of this infamous one (Iosif Rotariu) recalled recently that it burst his lymph nodes, and that the surgeon told him he could've died had the studs cut in a few centimetres higher.

I remember Paul Davis putting a crack in Glenn Cockerill's jaw with a punch. 1989, possibly?

Larry Lloyd got 'butted by a Man City player in his Liverpool days and got a red card to go with his red nose. There's a happy ending, though: Lloyd got his sending-off overturned when the authorities had a look at Match of the Day footage, becoming the first player to benefit from TV evidence in a disciplinary case.

Andoni Goikoetxea on Diego Maradona, Athletic Club against Barcelona September 1983 at Camp Nou. One for the purists.

The „Butcher of Bilbao“ could have a thread to himself on this topic!

Always remember a deeply unpleasant elbow smash on, I think, Pedro Mendes, by Ben Thatcher, the latter one of those shite drift about clubs type player who I'm surprised we never signed.
Trying to think of any of our players have had horrific injuries on them? I remember Andy Johnson fracturing a Sheffield United players eye socket which I'd never heard of happening and made me cautious as to my own eye sockets in the rough and tumble of the Long Eaton Sunday League.

The Johnson one was on George Santos and led to retribution the following season when Johnson had moved on to West Brom. It lead to a mass brawl and abandonment of the game soon afterwards after 3 sendings off.

I wonder if there's video of this? Do you recall if Baxter was carded?
If you search for “Forest Leeds FA Cup 1968” on YouTube there are extensive highlights over two videos. It’s a couple of years since I watched it (we wrote a bit about it in the ISM biography), but Kenneth Wolstenholme called it something like “the stupidest penalty ever“ (ie ever to be given away). The Leeds player was Jimmy Greenhoff (later of Stoke and Man U. I stand to be corrected by the Captain, but I don’t think Baxter was sent off - the game was something of an ill-disciplined battle and the reports and comment columns after the game were full of how lenient the officials had been. The penalty was the decisive goal in a 2-1 defeat in which both Grummitt and Sprake played on while badly injured.

That was a good watch, total carnage, Baker's left hook and "the stupidest penalty of all time." Also, Hennessy could have been Johnny Metgod's dad

Oh I suppose I will risk alienating myself a a bit more from y'all about Maddison and his girly punch to Yates. What the f***. First of all, that punch wouldn't knock over a 14 year old. Yates is a f***ing pansy. He should be thoroughly embarrassed with himself. Having said that, I do think it is a sending off offence. Maddison struck Yates with a closed fist. However lame Yates reaction is, it qualifies as VC and Maddison should have gone. VAR once again a shambles. But jesus christ, Yates is such a f***ing pussy for his reaction. Any number of bad tackles (including Moder's tackle that was only deemed a caution) are way worse than that girly punch. Anybody who supports Yates behaviour should NEVER complain about diving ever again.
