Ukraine v England

Trickie Trees

Stuart Pearce
Sorry, I've not read the whole thread in depth so apologies if this point has already been raised.

It concerns me a lot that a young lad (Ross Barkley) has two half decent games for his club and gets elevated straight into the squad. This to me illustrates either a lack of depth or a panic culture that someone must be picked as he soon as he displays an ounce of talent, or both.

For me, the under 21's needs to start becoming a proper outfit to serve the first team. By this I mean, for tournaments, take the best players, get them used to tournament football before they're thrust into the spotlight of a World Cup. I really don't understand how last year the powers that be thought it more valuable to take Oxlade-Chamberlain to a meaningless friendly in Brazil than give him some proper experience of tournament football.

Look at the Spanish and Germans, by the time their young players make the step up to the first team, they've already had a couple of tournaments (created a winning mentality in the tournaments) and that then feeds through into the first team.

Would Spain have taken Isco and Thiago to a meaningless friendly instead of playing them in the under 21 tournament? The experience those lads would have gained from that will have been far more useful and valuable than the Ox having a substitute appearance in a friendly.

Good point. The PL doesn't support the U221s sufficiently either. I think Pearce was fit to burst with the lack of support given for tournaments.

And quite rightly so.

The pathetic lack of support from the Premier League clubs and their players to the u-21 squad is a contributing factor to why England are so poor at full international level. You can't expect players to step straight into a full international squad alongside a completely different set of team mates and expect them to play as a team.

Pearce was right.

He's been tremendous again today. Looks like the real deal. A midfield of him and Wilshere, anchored by Jordan Henderson is an exciting prospect.

England need these young players like Barkley to be pushing through losing Gerard and lampard in the next couple of years will be hard, the lad drifts by players and seems to have an eye for goal, man utd mad Chelsea fancy him rather he stayed at Everton and see how the lad progresses.

Barkley wouldn't get the games at Chelsea like he is at Everton. Hope he stays at Everton as he has a lot of potential.

Said the other day that a criteria for being selected for England should be that a player is a first team regular for their club. If they aren't then they should simply be omitted from the squad. In the short term,it may mean we end up selecting a few players from further down the league, but in the long term, it would show who's out for money and who genuinely wants to build a career which includes playing for their country.

It would (hopefully) make the likes of Scott Sinclair and Adam Johnson think twice before choosing to sit on Man City's bench for a few extra quid.
