Transfer Window - Why?

Can anyone remind me why it originated at all? What are the benefits? And to the same end, what are the drawbacks?

Wasn't there a period in the good old days where a window of sorts was shut around April until the end of the season?

I think it was at least paertly so that smaller clubs wouldn't be under constant threat during a season of getting their best players snatched away. no?

It adds to the soap opera that is football in this sky sports generation

Yes there did used to be a deadline day towards the end of the season, but it wasn't anything like the frenzy we get now in these 2 short windows a year.

I wonder if Sky (and other meeja outlets) had any hand in persuading UEFA to adopt the current system?

Worked like a charm eh?!
lol

Yeah, it was essentially so that big clubs couldn't poach players or turn their heads when they were hitting form. Lots of times in past years you'd get a player hitting a run of form to then be snapped up by a Chelsea type club.

Personally I'm all for it, yes it's a bit of a circus on deadline day, but I also think that it's good for players to know where they stand for several months (similar to when Tyson was complaining he didn't know if he was coming of going).
