Top ten football league teams of the year 2010

This time last year, Reading were in the dumps. For most of 2009 they failed to win at home. At the end of December 2009 things seemed really low for them when they lost away at Plymouth.

With the appointment of Brian McDermott, January saw a new lease of life. A magnificent performance at the Madejski against Liverpool (I know this because I was there) earned them a replay at Anfield. Most people wrote off Reading's chances and they done the unthinkable and beat Liverpool away. A few days later, a tired Reading team were battered at the City Ground and were sent into the relegation zone.

During the next few months, Reading made a magnificent turnaround. This combined with West Brom doing in all the teams around Reading in the lower parts of the table helped the Royals climb the table. In addition, Reading had a magnificent FA Cup run reaching the quarter finals; having taken out Liverpool, Burnley and West Brom, they saw a 2-0 half time win over Aston Villa quickly turn to defeat during 10 minutes of madness in which Aston Villa took advantage of the daydreaming Royals to machine gun three goals into the net and then sealing it up with a penalty.

During the final part of the season, Reading were unstoppable. Gylfi Sigurdsson (the star player) was banging in goals like there was no tomorrow. Could Reading gate crash the playoffs?? Reading came close but a draw at Ipswich Town mathematically ended all hope of reaching the playoffs.

I think the reason why Reading won this award is because of their major change in fortune since the start of the 2009-2010 season. This time last year, Royals fans were pondering their chances of remaining in the Championship. If anyone had suggested to them that they would beat Liverpool away, reach the FA cup quarter finals and also get within spitting distance of the playoffs - they would have ruled this out as pure fantasy.

This time last year; Royals fans were programming Hartlepool, Yeovil and MK Dons into their Sat Navs in anticipation for this season.
