Thoughts on how many points this season

I know conventional wisdom is saying that 50 points are required for safety and as rule of thumb I guess that is as good a number as any. However comparing last seasons table at the 23 game point the bottom three clubs were on significantly more points. Leicester who were third from the bottom were on 23 points and only Colchester were averaging less than 1 point per game.

The 23rd game was quite significant because that was the game that the bottom 3 become the 3 that were relegated. This season the PPG is a much bigger spread top to bottom this season (2.3 to 0.78) compared to the same point last season (1.87 to .91). Which also indicates that the Championship was much more competitive last season.

So these are only numbers the problem is we are on the wrong end of them and I am becoming increasingly uneasy with our position.

So how many points for survival? I think it could be as low as 45 or 46.

50.

Making that target is another question.

(And then there's also the possibility it might not be enough)

I think 50 will be enough this season; it's close this year. Very close, and the teams at the bottom aren't gathering as much points as previous seasons.

Whether we can achieve that or not, who the f*** knows!

Wolves have our target points, we just need to repeat their first half of the season.

Numbers don't lie and just as last year the target was high (54) in a very competitive season I think this season is less competitive and the number will be as low as 47.

However we are currently on target for 36 :(

FACT

Not necessarily - everyone else might go into administration and have Luton-esque style irregularities leaving us to get promoted as champions.*

I dont normally post just like the read but thought I would enlighten you all!! lol

I had a chat with a Saints fan at the begining of the season and said we will struggle this season as Calderwood is a limited Manager, dont get me wrong I like him but I find him limited in his tactics that said we wont go down as long as we beat Saints at the end of the season as this will be the game that saves us. I predict 46 points and will be safe by 1 point and we will win on Saturday 1-3!

Meeeerrrrryyyy Xmas! :-*

How is the bottom set of teams being on a lower amount of points than last seasons bottom set of teams concerning for us?

We are still in this very much so. We are also on a decent bit of form and losing is limited. We lost to Sheff Utd in our last game and I think they are a respectable side to lose to regardless of whether they are twats or not.

We are what 4 points off relegation and still very much in this dogfight. That is all that matters not comparing us lot to last seasons lot.

I doubt that 50 points will be required to be honest. Even so, we need to win at least 7 or 8 games in the second half of the season and that will be a big ask given our current plight.

One thing is for sure, two of those wins have to come before the new year given the opposition in the next few fixtures.

For once I totally agree with you.

I would, however, like us not to be in this dogfight as quickly as possible - however that is acheived.

Speculating on points totals required to stay up is a fairly pointless excersise.

That really wasn't the point of the thread. I was trying to compare the competitiveness of the whole division compared to last year and certainly not a speculation on will we won't we get relegated.

I guess the concept is a bit esoteric and maybe should have been in the general thread. What the numbers tell you so far is that there is a much wider gap in top to bottom quality this season than last; which probably tells you that this is a poor division this year.
