Thanks for posting that, Red!
Life was fun then... the young uns today will like as not never experience the pleasure of such a shopping experience!
Thousands of records, concert tickets for 10 bob or less, getting a second-hand high on whatever the big lads were smoking... great days.

Great stuff, rocka. Bet you know Malc Allured too?

Yeah known Malc since 1979. We used to supply him with some of his equestrian gear back in those days.

More recent times we see him at MFN from time to time or when he's out and about.

I saw Vanessa Paradis do Les Cactus once. That was a roller coaster, I'll tell you.

Not the original, that was by Jacques Dutronc. Also later covered by the Last Shadow Puppets.
Love the LSP one. It's a fave among friends to have a boogie to

Even I know "the world is a cactus" isn't a good chat up line

I do find most things French as pretty sexy. Probably because I listened to a lot of Françoise Hardy at uni trying to impress a girl... It didn't work

It's easy for you young 'uns.
You can buy everything on line... no embarrassment quotient for you lot.

Got me thinking back to going in record shops when I wasn’t very old. I found them quite intimidating, they had a pretentious air about them, folk eyeballing what others were buying, blokes with pin badges on denim jackets of bands you’d never heard of...
I was reading a lot about music at the time and searching for stuff that had influenced bands I liked. Asked for something obscure in Selectadisc once and got a look like “go away little boy, you wouldn’t understand it if you listened to it”.
Always felt judged on what I was buying for a short period.
Bands came and went, if you were late getting into someone the guy at the counter would smirk, it was difficult to keep up with the next best thing at times.

Christ record shops sound worse than flicking through dildos in an adult shop

I hate that look of "thats too big for you son"

It seems like those guys went into guitar shops after record shops closed down.

I can confirm that the experience in Rough Trade Notts is brill.

That brings back fond memories for me Redemption.

Living on Bathley Street, a bit further down Arkwright Street from the shop, I spent hours in Selectadisc as a teenager. I got to know Brian Selby quite well, to the extent that he even offered me a job some years later when he opened his wholesale and mail-order centre on Canal Street. Unfortunately, I had to decline the offer.

Places like Rough Trade certainly don’t have that old pretentious atmosphere.

You’ve hit a point there about guitar shops though, christ, that was another experience in its own league.
There always seemed to be a bloke in every guitar shop with a full beard playing the Led Zeppelin back catalogue on a Les Paul without even looking at the guitar neck, just making eye contact with anyone that looked at him. Which set the tone of the whole shopping experience
When I bought the Gordon Smith in 1990 I only knew about 3 riffs, I think they put me in a booth just so I didn’t annoy the other people in there.

Anyway, let’s get back to Rockas stories :)

„No Stairway!“

I’m not kidding, the first time I went into Carlsbro at Mansfield, I’m sure Terry (later owned Music Scene) was playing Stairway to Heaven on a Les Paul. With a full beard. Not looking at the neck. It wasn’t Terry in every shop though, but there was always one.
