The Run Up to the World Cup

Trents

John Robertson
We have 5 matches before the break including the League Cup

22/10 Liverpool(H)
30/10 Arsenal(A)
5/11 Brentford(H)
9/11 Spurs(H) - Cup
12/11 Palace(H)

Is it safe to write the first 2 matches off? Can't see us getting anything in those in our current state. I would also look at rotating players for the Cup. The Palace match is one of those we could get a result in.

You would think Liverpool would be too much but we could maybe nick a cheeky point at Arsenal if luck goes our way.

Brentford and Palace depend on how we set up. If we’re too open then it’ll end like up like our other results but maybe could get a point or two if more reserved, but we’re offering so little going forward, it’s hard to see where a goal could come from, let alone a win.

We’ll probably beat Spurs, then get knocked out next round by someone like Grimsby, such is the Forest way.

The luck we would need to nick a point at Arsenal would be for their entire team to go down with flu on the day of the game and the ref to decide that he's going to send off 3 of their players.

If we're lucky we'll get 2 more points before the World Cup.

I'll be over he moon if we can get three points from those fixtures. I think we're capable of getting at least one smash and grab from either Brentford or Palace. Liverpool and Arsenal are free hits.

We need 4 points before the World Cup to still be in a fight come the new year.

Liverpool and Arsenal are a write off and should we get anything it’s a huge bonus.
The Brentford and palace games are huge, there’s loads of teams at the bottom and if we go into the World Cup on 10 points we won’t be far off everyone else IMO.

Of course, we have to improve massively in the new year to stay up.

Agreed. Four points minimum is enough to keep us in touching distance.

The Brentford one will be the key one, they have been very hit & miss this season

It will also take the pressure off the Palace game with a positive result - who are a very good side & won't be anywhere near the bottom.

4 would be great but I would take 3 providing we beat Brentford.

12 points and a positive goal difference by the start of the world cup. Cup game we can win on pens with hendo saving all five if necessary.

The recent approach works fine in away games. It's not pretty but we're solid and improving slowly. Puts us in with a reasonable chance of an away point with the outside chance of a win.

At home though we have to be bolder. Not gung-ho... we'll get battered... but need to try and be more progressive with the ball. We need to look like winning games like Villa if we're gonna have any chance of surviving.

It wouldn’t shock me if your correct.

I would say we’d be as good as down if you are correct as well.

the brentford and palace games are winnable, just need cooper to select one striker from the three we have, not brennan johnson ffs.

It is difficult to genuinely see any points from those games, but it's the hope what drives us on, so you just never know.

We might just catch one of other of those teams on a bad night and it's always possible to get a point if you defend as if your life depends on it.

So, I go for a spread of 0 to 4 points.

If we continue our defensive "solidarity" (no matter how much copium I think our fellow forum writers are on when they say that) then I believe we can get a point or 6 from the Brentford and Palace game. But, like I said, we cannot continue that front three. I truly believe in the front three of Taiwo(or surridge) MGW and Brennan. In the middle, I would like to see O'brien with Yates and Freuler. And not because I don't like Mangala, he's still regaining fitness so maybe you'd start with him then get O'brien in after the half.

I do truly believe this team can make it work, just depends if Cooper can figure the puzzle out in time.

Someone posted a stat recently about how in 8 of the last ten seasons a team in our position now stayed up. Unfortunately I think that stat is going to look a lot worse after these next four league games when we'ii still only have 6 points.

Everyone is focused on the run up to the World Cup, however, Forest will effectively have a whole new mini season to get themselves out of trouble. A six week 'pre-season' and a 24 game 'season'. No promoted team has ever had this before. It's a chance to work on the fitness and the shape of the team and assess the squad. Then, after a couple of games we'll have a chance to add to the squad. This all means that we have EVERY chance of staying up.

I can’t see us adding to our points tally against Liverpool and Arsenal. In that case,I reckon we need maximum points against Brentford and Palace to remain in touch-given that the 2 games immediately
after the World Cup are Manchester United (away) and Chelsea (home) in which I feel 2 more defeats
will be forthcoming.
It’s worth bearing in mind our appalling goal difference means that the other sides near the bottom have
another 1 point advantage over us.
Unless something strange happens I can sadly see us being well adrift from safety by 1 January.
