You remember that time we had Aaron Ramsey on loan and you could see instantly that he was a different class...

Step forward Kieran Dowell.

Came on at about 60 mins and the game changed significantly. Everything constructive went through him. Such a deft touch and silky skills.

My Everton friends assure me we've temporarily l, at least, stolen a gem from them.

I agree.

Not sure if you play him on his own or with Clough but I think the dynamism that our midfield hasn't got is solved with this chap.

An excellent debut for me.

Very good technically. Will need to adapt very quickly to physical demands of the championship because he was dispossessed a lot for his short cameo.

Will be played in behind striker in my opinion. Clough on the bench after another game in which he contributed nothing.

My Bolton Wanderers friend (who is still pissed about losing Clough) reckons he'll have left Forest by Christmas. But that's for the other thread.

I think Dowell bought out the best in Clough when he came on, looked like a different player all together. Would be interesting to see them both start

He was excellent in his brief cameo and we looked far more of a threat with him on the pitch.

Looks a great player. Given the personal now I'm not sure where Clough fits in now.

For those oldies looked and played a lot like Duncan McKenzie,
Agree, on those 30 minutes could be a complete steal, even if only for one year, and when have we said that about any loan over the last five years..

At this level there's a lot to be said for having a player that the rest of the team can use as a get-out clause - the magicians who will always look to create even in the most troublesome situations. Antonio and Reid were these players in recent years but weren't replaced, but now we potentially have two new ones in Dowell and McKay. Very promising indeed.

Nope, Benny is as inconsistent as Clough going forwards presently, but you at least get a relentless workrate with Benny.

yeah , so much workrate that you never see him in the highlights video and you can see clough trekking back , got taken off after the first half after being useless.

Agree about Osborn, based on second half yesterday, hope we go 4-2-3-1, and then

Vaughan, Cohen or Bouch
Dowell, Clough or Brereton, McKay
Brereton or Vellios

you should be asking that of osborn, not clough.

If I were to play one of Osborn or Clough in the midfield three I would pick Benny. I don't want to see clough playing in the three man midfield, nor do I want to see him playing down a flank. I see him just behind a striker but there are better players for that position than Clough now. Even if we were to play like that. I think as the season progresses Clough will find himself on the bench. Guaranteed.

Your too reliant on streams mate. They don't give you a true perspective of work done off the ball.

Clough and Osborn are different players with different strengths.

I wouldn't play either in central midfield as neither has the required skill set, but Osborn has looked best as part of an attacking three as a nuisance who quickly and relentlessly closes down the oppo defence, and Clough plays best as the skillfull, creative number ten with flair who unlocks defences.

Just because you fancy him...

Don't want to put too much of a dampener on things but when teams push up against a passing team like Milwall did to us, they usually get tired and the game opens up with more time and space in the final 30 minutes.

The real test will be how he does over 90 minutes. He looked very good but lets see how he does over a sustained period of games before getting carried away.

I know he's got a great shot on him, but I'd like to see Dowell in a deeper role alongside a tackler like Cohen or Vaughan, because that's where we most need his quality and control.

I have complete faith that Clough, McKay, Brereton etc are good enough to create and score plenty, so Dowell will be best pulling the strings like he does for England U20s .

He didn't play that role for the U20s though, he played as part of the forwards Onomah and Cook played the deep roles for England. He does look more suited for that kind of thing than Clough does but I still think he'll play cutting in from the right as he did last night or behind the striker.
