The ‘I have something to say about Forest that doesn’t warrant its own thread’ Thread

Just chatting with my wife about Forest, points deductions etc and I said it’s not really much fun being in the premier league at the moment “No, it was much more fun getting there” she says.

Today I learned Captain John McGovern was never capped by the Jocks. What in the good name of hell should I do with this information!?

Funnily enough, the Guardian did a piece a couple of weeks back, where they were talking about players who had won European Cups and never been internationally capped.

Ajax‘s goalie from the 1970s had won three, and never picked up a single appearance for the Netherlands.

Didn't the Sweaties think he was English?
Yup, that was about it. It was said that all of Forest’s Scottish contingent would be in the squad (for the 1978 World Cup, I think this was) and the press duly got a pic of messrs Burns, Gemmill, Robertson and McGovern in kilts (was it Forest shirts and kilts or am I imagining that?). But only the first three were picked because they didn’t realise Border was Scottish. It seems they also overlooked the veteran John O’Hare, not unreasonably perhaps, though he had still been lively enough to get away from Phil Thompson to win the decisive penalty in the League Cup Final replay!

By jingo, who would have thought that John McGovern, born in Montrose, wasn’t Scottish!

That is Forest-levels of organisation, right there!

I firmly believed then, and still do, that Border deserved to go to Argentina, but it shouldn't be forgotten that there was a contingent of idiots amongst the Forest fanbase at that time who somehow managed to convince themselves that he wasn't good enough for us let alone Scotland.

Didn’t Ally McLeod, the Scottish manager, do what Southgate is going to do and take trusted out of form players like Don Masson instead ?

Yes, quite a few fans seemed to want him to be a goal-scoring, box-to-box, get-stuck-in all-rounder spraying 40-yard passes, etc. Whereas he seemed highly valued by his teammates (and Cloughie) as someone who would calmly break up opposition attacks, winning the ball and passing it to someone more creative. I think he wasn’t helped by his physique and his running style, which maybe made it look a bit like he was holding back, but he could certainly hold his own with some of the more obviously physical opposing midfielders and I can certainly recall him getting under the skin of one or two of Liverpool’s so-called hard men.
