Summer 2023 Transfer Window

Why would anyone try and get promoted at work then, as it's only a little bit more money after all.
Not really comparable though, football is a very different world to regular employment.

In this instance, its short-term financial gain (Saudi contract but extremely limited prospects after that contract ends) vs long-term prospects (top flight football, international prospects, a longer career, etc).

If you offered me 10x my wage to go to Saudi Arabia for 2 years, I wouldn’t even need to think about it or discuss with my family, it would be a firm “no fookin‘ thanks”

And that’s from the point of view of it being life changing money. For a lot of these players, sure it’s a huge increase in wages but proportionally it doesn’t change anywhere near as much for them as most are already in the top 1% of global earners.

Lodi looks like he won’t be here next year as the culture shock of moving to Notts from Madrid is too much for his family. Now replace Notts with Riyadh 😬

The Saudi League project will fail.

It's exactly the same in principle and i think you'll be surprised at how many will go over the coming years.

Bobby the Brain (below) wouldn't go for two years, but i bloody well would, even if it meant no prospects on return.

A good footballer will always have prospects anyway.

People forget two things as well in regards to footballers earnings:
1) Lifestyle creep is real. Footballers buy expensive things and have to pay for them still.
2) Their careers are 75% shorter than the average persons.

Some may prioritise playing in the PL from a challenge or reputational POV or not moving to Riyadh because it's a backwards hell hole but I don't think you'll find many footballers who solely turn down another club because "I have enough money".

A lot of people said the same sort of things about the Chinese Super League to be fair. The careers of the players who took the CSL money never recovered after going over there. When you've been playing at a poor level for a number of years, the likelihood of a top flight club being interested in signing you is very slim.

China didn't get a tenth of the quality in all it's time than Saudi has in 1 year (or more specifically, since last month).

The point is, players ARE going, and some big names are considering it too. Let's just see where they are in a year.

Everton have made a bid of €40m (£34.4m) to try to sign Almeria’s El Bilal Toure on a five-year contract. Wolves, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Serie A clubs are also interested in signing him. (Source: @sachatavolieri)
Story indirectly linked to Zapata, who was a target in January allegedly. Probably lazy journalism throwing the usual names out there.....

Duvan Zapata is also a wanted man this summer, with Nottingham Forest and Everton keen to acquire the Colombian’s signature. These potential departures have meant that Atalanta need to prepare themselves, and as such they are looking at Almería’s El Bilal Touré. Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Italian club are in for him. The Malian international is 21 years old and and has only played his first season in La Liga, scoring 7 goals in 15 starts. He has impressed with his pace and athleticism, which is why Atalanta are monitoring him.

Touré has only ever played for Reims and Almería, and Atalanta feel that they can mold the striker into a dangerous proposition. The potential fee is unknown at this stage.

Interesting excerpt to highlight the importance of controlling the wage bill, the transfer fees are quite often the lesser hit to the books...

Explained: How Arsenal can afford big summer

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire says that Arsenal's seemingly enhanced willingness to spend is a 'reward' for Mikel Arteta.

"Arsenal are actually in a very strong position when it comes to spending," he told Sky Sports News.

"The reason for that is they have managed to get their wages under control.
"Arsenal's wages are lower than they were in 2018. They are £150m to a £170m less than Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City. That has given them the flexibility to go into the market and buy new players without having to worry too much.

"Plus, they have got the additional benefits of Champions League matches coming in, premium prices and the minimum I would say prize money of £50m from being participants.

"So, you factor that all together and they've probably still got a bit of leeway in terms of what they can spend over this present window."

Almost all of those players are at the arse end of their careers. Just like when the Chinese Super League and numerous others did in the past (I recall people saying the same things about how the CSL would change football as they are saying about Saudi Arabia now). Saudi Arabia won't be the last to try this either, the outcome is always the same.

I think the longevity and success of the Saudi project will be determined by whether the corrupt folk at UEFA and FIFA eventually shoe horn the Saudis into the champions League.

Top players want to win trophies, meaningful trophies. Honours Vs hard cash

Saudi League is the new Barca/Real/City/Juventus gang. As soon as the Saudi League takes players from them then UEFA will act. But the more tiered the better for that gang - they simply want guaranteed cash grabs every year and however they can leverage the Saudi League for their individual gains they will.

I really doubt that we'll be paying £35m for a striker this summer and I doubt any of the teams mentioned there will be either.
Not sure what Fulham's situation is like, but I agree with the rest. Everton and Wolves look to have some financial issues (the former with FFP, the latter are selling the family silver) and I can't imagine us spending £35m on one player when we have other key positions to also fill. Feels like agent talk to me.

Brighton just signed a new keeper so Sanchez is likely available.

Cheaper than Henderson I imagine and a lot less wages. Think he would do a similar job and better with the ball at his feet than Henderson.

If we are on a budget then he could be a good signing instead of Henderson.

Saudi football is like LIV golf. The oldies will go for a final payday but there will be the odd one that suprises you and takes the cash.

And as LIV seems now to have been a massive diversion to get the Saudi feet under the main table, maybe that’s what we’ll see here.

We were linked with him (Verbruggen, the bloke Brighton just signed) in January weren't we, but for about 1/10th of what Brighton just shelled out?

Just Googled Sanchez, apparently he "chose not to be available" for the last five games of the season which sounds a bit ominous.

With regards to the Saudi's, lets see if the players actually end up being paid their wages. Isn't Grabben having a dispute because they didn't end paying him?

Am I missing something with Sanchez? He has been nothing special who lost his place to Jason Steele at the back end of the season and is now third choice at Brighton. Not a wagon I'd be hitching too personally.

Edit

By the sounds of it Brighton fans rate him, but apparently has a bad attitude and ego.

Sanchez didn't do much wrong but apparently fell out with the manager. I am not that keen either personally.

Jason Steele who is by most accounts not very good has gone in there and done a better job than him at Brighton. They just have a habit of making players look better than they are.

Maybe I am completely wrong on this one.
