Not sure if anyone's mentioned it but several reports suggest Williams is having his medical today.

On humourous names - in my part of Italy we have a few Chinese businesses, the funniest of which is 'Nang Fang'. And no, it's not a dentist.

So we've now effectively signed a whole new back 5!

Great for squad depth, but at least 2 of Worrall, Cook, Mckenna and Biancone are going to be disappointed this season I feel...

Its clear from all the addons in our transfers that we're trying to spread the financial pain over a couple of years. Makes sense to have one big loan to buy in the squad.
So arrange installments. A loan with obligation is going to cost a big outlay anyway. Just seems in this instance, that mechanism for a player we know well seems superfluous.

You're missing the point.
We don't have infinite money and Garner is going to be VERY expensive. Personally, if he's available on loan, I'd rather go that route and spend that money on a really high quality replacement for Zink, which we are going to need if we want to play good attacking football.

I think we are witnessing quite a brutal operation.
No sentiment is being allowed to get in the way.
No “we’ll give the lads who got us promoted a chance to see how they get on in the Premiership”.

It appears that Murphy and co. have looked at what is needed to survive in the Premiership, and that is their driving force.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see us sign a completely new team.

Am I correct in thinking you can only have one loan from any Premiership side, if so the Garner deal will have to be a purchase

You can have two if one has an obligation to buy.

This how the Loan + Obligation to buy got associated with Garner in the first place. But it was always a sort of ruse if Man U was uncertain.

But from a FFP pov, doubt there's much difference in the schedule of payments with a 3 year installment deal from abig loan fee plus installments after the loan has converted.

Serving on board HMS Iron Duke the Chinese laundryman was a bloke called But Fu King (Mr But). His official title was Number 1. Number 2 was a Chinese bloke whose name was Michael. These Chinese civilians were usually from Honky Fid. On deployments ships would often carry a Chinese tailor, known as Sew-Sew. In days gone by, before my time in the Andrew, ships would also carry a cobbler, known as Tap-Tap.

As an aside, eight Chinese civilians lost their lives serving with the RN/RFA during the Falklands War.
I'll bet quite a number were recruited whilst sailors were on shore leave in HK and having their kit made up in one of the many favoured establishments. We always went to our favoured shops which had been used by crews for aeons and we always got good stuff at a good price.

We just need some bodies in id say we need 2 centre mids and 2 attacking mids at this stage.

Depending on how you view Yates is whether one or 2 of the centre mids needed are starters. I’d say Yates is a bench player in the prem so will need 2 starters probs.
We don't need any more centre backs. I can still see Yates thriving in the PL, he's tough and strong and seems to learn fast and will have better players around him for his weakness (passing) to be less of an issue than last season.

I think we're a bit lightweight up front still. Last time we managed with Grabban and Taylor for the first half of the season but obviously Grabban has left and with Taylor being loaned out can't really see he'll be first team at all, we then got in Davis and Surridge when Grabban got injured, and though they did well in the championship Davis has gone back to Villa, we don't know whether Surridge will make the step up, and Johnson isn't an out and out striker.

So at the moment we have lost Grabban, Garner and Zinckernagel with no obvious replacements in yet, Awoyini has replaced Davis, and it's questionable how much Colback and Yates will be able to operate in the PL.

I like that they've sorted out the defence first as it's more important this is settled because we don't need to be conceding a lot. It would be nice to see some more attacking players, ideally we need first team replacements for the above 3 and some cover players (though I suppose Surridge will end up being a cover striker or one to bring off the bench later on).

A zillion years ago when I was still a young man I used to be visited a lady rep named Mariam Bangs and the company she worked for was Arno Fuchs. Her business card was the source of endless amusement.
They could have been some sort of double act!

I do wonder whether we will be in for surprise with a name for CM next week. Most teams pre-season camps away are ending which is usually when the market really picks up (despite our great work!)

And even for CAM position, we will need more than MGW even if we manage to land him.

Richards & Biancone came from nowhere and within a few days they were done.

In a perfect world we must go for broke on a high quality CM and AM +£20m each. Then start to fill some of the gaps in squad depth and variety like LWB (Toffolo), CM (O’Brien), AM and CF, with the caveat that those additional players will all compete for, and are more than capable of winning and keeping a place in the first team on merit. So that’s a minimum of 6 more, 2 or 3 of which are critical. But there’s no reason to believe we can’t achieve that from what we’ve done so far.

I don’t think we’ve been particularly “bad” to the promoted squad at the moment, most of our business replaces positions where the loan has returned.

Davis > Awoniyi
Spence > Williams
Lowe > Richards

Then:

Cook > Niakhate
Obviously, the Samba situation > Henderson

Cook will be really valuable, and is still quality, but I can’t imagine he’s expect to play a full season at starting CB. Samba situation is what it is at this point. Other than Samba, I’d say we’re replacing last seasons loans.

Colback will be back to CM, and covering LWB in an emergency.

I hope we see 2x CM’s. Then another 5 to actually improve on last year.

Yeah I think it’s been said many times on here, but it really feels like they wanted to spend money on the attack. We obviously have a theoretically expensive player in Brennan, likely would have gone £20+m on striker had Awoniyi not had a buy out. Then replacing 2 attack minded player in Zinc and Jimmy. Big money moves coming, which is likely causing the delay.

Question: Would we be happy with signing Garner permanently? I would, he's young and a likely high ceiling awaits, despite not being proven at PL level. Just break open the piggy bank, EM. Hell, get Garner AND Mgw . Give us a young midfield the envy of the league.

During this and the January window I think you're spot-on RB. The only certain starter from last season will be Johnson in my opinion, particularly from our own academy graduates.

We've been chasing this for 23 f***ing years and there's absolutely no place for sentimentality. Ultimately, surviving, consolidating and progressing is the sole aim.

Yeah I definitely would. Wouldn’t shock me if that why they have left these areas til last. Both in similar situations. The coaches will want to look at them, they will want to feel like starting opportunities are available and we are willing to wait to get the right guys at important spots (whilst having back ups of nothing materialises)
