Steve Cooper will always be the MAN!

Football is a fickle mistress.
Today's "best thing since sliced bread" is tomorrow's "sliced bread is shit".
SC is a realist.
He quit Swansea because he knew they didn't have the appetite to match his ambition.
As yet he hasn't been sacked from any of his roles.
I would think he will be gauging the way the Forest owner and Board deliver on their aspirations to be challengers near the top of the Prem rather than avoiders of relegation near the bottom.
The owner will also be gauging things carefully: SC has delivered promotion, and is now operating at the top level, but has no track record of being able to do that successfully.
Que sera sera!

He was pretty evasive on a new contract in this interview

I thought that too, but it's probably an exercise in trust based on an agreed contract in principle.

EM has to trust SC will sign if he keeps his side of the bargain (funding for competitiveness)
SC has to trust that EM will fund as agreed, and then he signs the provisionally agreed terms.

I think, and hope, that this is a good thing and then all of a sudden, shortly before the season starts, he signs a five year deal.

I was just surprised he didn't say something like "that's all underway but there's no urgency; itvwill get concluded soon enough. My focus right now is on the details of the new season the Premier league'

I'm not worried. I believe he's due a mega deal and he'll get it.

I was just surprised by his evasiveness.

Nottingham's dirty secret
I would assume he's waiting to see if the owner delivers on his promise of building a competitive team. So far all of the signs are good.

'In principle' = as long as you get me the player's I need/want I'll sign.

I am not sure it will be dependent on X, Y or Z. I think SC knows we will back him with what he wants.

I think they are just leaving it until last because he probably thinks signing players is more important at the minute.

If he doesn't sign after a month in the season then yes, I will be worried.

Agree. He's not gone through this so far just to not sign a contract which he will surely be offered. I imagine he doesn't want any attention on him, just the squad.

I don't want to be that guy especially not about Steve Cooper but with the way football is, managers don't tend to see out the full terms of their contracts at clubs unless they do okay. If Steve does half of what he did last season for us and we are around the top half, a team higher up the food chain will nab him. If he starts the season the way Chris Hughton did, he could be out of a job by the World Cup.

For me, the important part is how hungry is he for this and are we giving him a chance to succeed this season. I think he seems as determined as ever and I think we're backing him really well.

Suppose it all depends on what Wales decide to do after the WC next year and if he has any plans on that?

Well, you might be that guy, but you are correct.

58% of currently serving managers in the EFL and Premier League have been in post less than a year. That goes up to 78% for less than 2 years.
In fact, Steve is already the 42nd longest serving manager at a whopping 293 days.

What food chain would nab him that would be realistically better than us? I suspect he'd rather stay put if club's like Villa and Everton came sniffing.

Can't guarantee Marinakis won't get nervous if we start slowly which really could happen though. So it's even more important we stay behind the manager and show how much we are behind him which I'd hope wouldn't be abig ask considering the monumental job he's already done

Managers will always want to make sure there's an emergency fire exit open should they want to get out, clubs will mostly want to do their best and protect their asset by making sure the only way out (other than being sacked) is for head hunters to pay a big compo fee

Eventually you agree on something that protects the club and the managers interests somewhat equally. Cooper isn't daft, he knows how ruthless football can be and as much as he's enjoying his time here the truth is that nothing lasts forever in this game. The highs and lows of modern football come so thick and fast it really is a constantly changing picture. He's not untouchable and he could very easily go from hero to zero overnight, equally he could continue to impress at the highest level and have a whole new window of opportunity that he might fancy

It's why he put so much emphasis on getting the players to enjoy last season and to fully take it in, it's rare to be part of something special like that. A lot of those players will never experience anything quite like that again in their entire careers, and he made a point of getting every single one of them to understand the reality that it won't always be like that (infact you'll have far more lows than highs throughout your playing career)

For what it's worth i'm fairly certain he'll sign a contract, it might not be the contract terms we would have liked him to agree to but an extended contract no less. For now we should just enjoy our time with an ambitious, young coach who has a great understanding of the modern game

Can't people do two things at once anymore?

The longer he leaves it, the more attention will be on him though.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the contract was signed the week after promotion was secured. This type of news is being saved for when the fans need a “lift”.

I sometimes find myself just thinking about the things that make the job Cooper has done, to this point, even more remarkable.
  • He's not even been in the job for a year yet.
  • He hasn't, until now, had a pre-season with the players
  • He hasn't, until now, had the chance to bring more than a couple of 'his' players in.
Aye... it kinda dismisses the old myth "the manager needs a few seasons etc".
