From those who have seen him preseason, what has he been like? Does he provide anything resembling pace and width? Will he challenge for the first team?

Cheers

Saw him yesterday, he didnt do too much to be honest! But saying that not many players did that much

Was more impressed by Paterson...this guy has genuine pace to burn, a couple of occasions at Chez he left the full back for dead. Also noted that he switched him to the other flank when their opposite full back was flagging. This guy poses a real threat out wide to anyone who even vaguely lakes pace. This lad is my one to watch this season

Apparently he left a few Mansfield defenders on their arses too. This kid could be the one

Seen him twice, he seems to lack confidence imo. Needs more time.

In terms of pace and determination Paterson is streets ahead, if JP settles in well and gains confidence he'll tear some defences apart this season. He's a young lad though with a small frame, he could get bullied out of games.

Agree, for me he will be the replacement we've lacked since Mcleary left. Looks a good prospect and that "get to the by line pace" should provide plenty more chances for the strikers

I think he will grow in confidence quickly once the fans at the CG see that pace and he flies past a few full backs and the crowd get right behind him.

Agree that he will undoubtedly get smashed to pieces by a few no nonsense defenders like shaun derry etc but tricky quick wingers normally are very slight. I back him to be a good prospect and have an impact

How are you settling in to life at the city ground Jamie?

We've been deprived of this kind of player. If he does skin the Huddersfield full backs a couple times he'll be an instant fan favourite

Pato managed to somehow get stuck between 2 Mansfield players, jink around them in a fashion that meant they ran into each other so he could shoot, was very impressive

I'm not in any away comparing Patterson to Messi, but Messi gets smashed to pieces by some defenders in La Liga and he just gets up. But look at League 1 i bet Patterson has come up against loads of dirty f***ers in that league week in week out. So it be all natural for him to be poleaxed by Derry and that dirty shit at Wigan called Alcatraz or whatever he's called.

Your right, plenty of cloggers in Lg 1. Sounds an exciting prospect, what we have lacked for a long while now. Still think we need another similar winger so we have options to attack both flanks.

Agree. Another good young winger and a young pacey hungry striker. Last season palace had, zaha, bolasie and nutty. They didn't do too bad. I know nutty isn't that young but did come from lower league.

can't see BD playing two wingers - rather than hard working wide midfielders - at the same time

Even if they don't play together all the time its nice to have those attacking options. He definately went with varied attacking options during a game last season to the extent he had 4 strikers on the pitch near the end of some games. Football is much more a squad game and a change off the bench at 60 minutes can change a game particularly when the opposition are tiring. Trouble is we had no pace to stretch the play last year. Another pacy winger would give us that. Carayol or Adomah would do nicely.

Reid will take up the left flank - McLaughlin might be his understudy , Paterson will likely be on the right even though he has played more on the left at walsall - he's right footed and we need 1 or 2 more wingers with a bit of pace and trickery. We lacked players with skill and pace that will run at players.

I really hope we also buy a solid left winger - mainly because Reid left us so exposed there last season (kept coming inside etc) and although he has a big part to play for us, I just don't see his fitness levels contributing to 40 odd games if we've got designs on being top 2.

Reid has really surprised me a lot with his fitness , before he came back for his 2nd spell , Reid was very injury prone at all his previous clubs - Spurs , Charlton & Sunderland. The last time he managed 40 games was back in his first spell at forest. A lot of Credit to Reid that he kept himself trim , fit and stay clear of injuries.

Excellent to hear about Patterson.

Imho, we can't just rely on one fast guy, we need at least one other. Otherwise, if he isn't on the pitch that aspect of threat is gone. And let's face it, most fullbacks these days are not so good at defending, so wingers who can take on fullbacks, one way or the other, are a real good idea.
