Standard of Referees (Sponsored by Steven Reid)

What the ref said to Yates about not returning the ball to us.

“The referee told me: ‘That’s the rule, they get the ball.’ I honestly don’t know how that is possible."

So he doesn't even know the rules he's supposed to apply. The concern is that's a rule almost everyone knows so what other rules does he not know?

On that basis he should be boiled down for glue.

Checked the highlights on the Forest site and on Sky.

Neither show the corner, Konate going down, the ref blowing his whistle with CHO in possession. Unbelievable (Jeff).

It's on the MOTD highlights, but why is such a pivotal moment not on other highlights?

IIRC, at no time does Konate hold his head, suggesting its a head injury. He looks to see if Liverpool have cleared the danger, sees that they haven't and goes onto his knees.
Tierney stops play, runs over, and within seconds, he has jumped up and got ready for the restart. Meanwhile, Diaz has taken the ball off CHO and given the ball to Tierney.

This is exactly what happened. I didn't see any evidence of a head injury. When the cheat Konate stood up he was more concerned with one of his feet.

You just know if it had happened the other way round (no chance I know) that it would have been a large part of the highlights. Last nights coverage on 5 live was infuriating - ex-players and a so called journalist spouting off about something they hadn't watched properly. They spent about 5 minutes laughing about our appointment of Clattenberg.

If Jurgen had said the same thing I'm sure he would have been taken seriously.

I hear people saying we've just been unlucky but I really believe there is more to it than that. I don't think it's luck at all, I think it's largely down to perception and that influences the way teams are treated. Rashford goes down in the box and the presumption is penalty because surely he's too good for the defender. Taiwo Awoniyi, Neco Williams, Andrew Omabamadele go down in the box and the presumption is no penalty because they're lucky to have made it into the opponents box in the first place and the defender must be too good for them.

This season has been exceptional for Forest in that regard in my view. Since Christmas alone we've had cast-iron penalties for Awoniyi and Williams not given, Boly sent off for a perfect tackle, Toney moving the ball (and the referee's foam) before taking a free kick and the incident against Liverpool yesterday where they were given the ball back by the referee for no reason with 90 seconds to go. All of those incidents have cost us points.

Then you get into the FFP (or whatever it's called these days) rules where we are likely to be penalised for making a decision that made us significantly more financially secure than the alternative. We all know that the impact of these rules is to preserve the 'monopoly' of the top 6, the teams that the EPL can market across the world, and keep everyone else in their place. Forest will likely get a 6 point deduction - I'd argue that the officials have already taken those points from us in open play. Parachute payments do the same thing - by and large they keep the same 30 teams in and around the EPL. If teams are given parachute payments when they are relegated I'd argue that they should also be given 'catapult' payments when they are promoted to give them a chance to compete.

The EPL is borderline corrupt - I want no further part of it. I'd rather Forest play in the Championship where the competition is much closer and the stench of corruption is only apparent if the wind is in the wrong direction. And, as far as watching football live goes, it's non-league for me all the way. Proper football where VAR is not ruining the game, where you can stand 10 feet from the action, where you get change from a tenner for a pie and a pint, where the fan rivalry is intense but not menacing and where I can be home 20 minutes after the final whistle. I'll take that over the EPL experience any day of the week.

I watched Gainsborough play Whitby on Saturday. There was about 500 in attendance. No problems getting a pint and some chips and pie, free to walk around the ground or change seats, etc. Home fans mixing with away fans, no trouble. Lenient but sensible referee decisions. No drama. Football was a bit long-ball and agricultural, but still an enjoyable couple of hours watching a match. Plus hot running water in the taps in the toilet. Gainsborough won 2-0 and the walk to the car took literally 3 minutes.

You only have to think back earlier in the season when Liverpool had two sent off against Spurs (rightly IMO) and they lost it at the death. They were demanding the game be replayed FFS. Surprised questions weren’t asked in the House of Commons.

Why can’t the ref use VAR to check things they’re unsure of. It works perfectly in rugby.

On Saturday the ref could have paused the game, asked VAR to check who should have the drop ball (Spoiler: It was us) then make the correct decision.

How have we got to a point where the refs are required to guess and then VAR only step in where they are ‘allowed’ to, and only if it’s a whopper?

This is not an effective way to use the technology.

We have the technology, so we should use it. Rugby Union does. Cricket does. The 4th official on Saturday apparently realised that Liverpool's referee had got it wrong so why wasn't play stopped & the referee speaks to the 4th official & then we get the ball. Not looking at a sending off for a second yellow is ridiculous - I'm still amazed Boly was sent off, I thought the opposition's player committed a foul & was getting a yellow card. The decision to send Worrall off at Old Trafford was insane. He wasn't the last defender. I could go on.........I just don't understand why we are getting so many decisions go against us.
Then there's FFP, I think it's a fundamental flaw in the rules for seasons spent in the EFL to count, that means a Championship club is at an immediate disadvantage. It's anti competitive. Amazon has been done for that in the EU........squeezing out the smaller providers......that's what the PL is doing.
Then there's the City Council.........they have a successful business - Nottingham Forest - bringing business to Nottingham (after Wembley people talked about a £100 million boost to businesses in Nottingham) & they're prepared to lose that........it makes no sense.
My mood borders between being very f***ing angry & angry......

One thing I noticed at the weekend, perhaps for the first time (I really should pay attention) is that in the Bundesliga, many Referees, when awarding a free kick, draw a semi-circle around the ball, and not a straight line behind which the ball is placed.

With a semi-circle or course, a „clever“ player cannot then move the ball laterally, like Toney did.

God knows why it’s taken my years to spot this!

I think the argument has always been that doing this would mean more stoppages in play, slowing the game down and disrupting the natural "flow" of the game

Personally I think that's a BS argument; you can check this stuff in like ten seconds

Getting these decisions correct is far more important than any minor disruption to play, in my opinion

You'd have thought a quick "Yo guys is this right" on the headsets wouldn't really disrupt the flow. The chances of all 5 officials being wrong at the same time is minimal.

Absolutely, it happens in rugby all the time, takes seconds.
If the officials had anything about them, they'd have done it during the stoppage, and it'd have been 'Restart, Forest Ball' or 'Restart, Liverpool Ball' in Tierneys ear.

Absolutely. Given most of the ground were shouting it at him (words to that effect).

The fact that Diaz picked up the ball from CHO and booted it into his own net from outside the penalty box shows that Liverpool knew they were under the cosh, and tried to waste some time and alleviate the pressure.
I bet they couldn't believe their luck when Tierney handed their keeper possession and allowed them to switch defence to attack.

Again, Liverpool seasoned players at this level / dark arts, take the ball away from CHO straight when treatment started, passes to the keeper. I believe this is to waste time at the expected Forest restart as Liverpool were under the cosh, break the play etc.

Started watching the Carragher and Henry analysis of Tierney’s error on Saturday. Had to switch off after a couple of minutes as it wound me up. Carragher blaming the forest players…

The Forest players generally get booked when they try and do the refs job for them.

MGW and Danilo were literally booked moments before, both for very little as far as I could tell.
