Spurs ?

What's all that supposed to prove?

I can't see them challenging the top 4, certainly top 6 though.

Palacios is a monster.

those +20 point seasons were extraordinary circumstances - bobby robson replacing gullit at newcastle, everton having a massive "blip" season, liverpool concentrating on the league after winning the champions league, and, maybe tellingly considering who manchester city have in charge - mark hughes taking over at blackburn.

I don't think any of the above stated factors could be described as "exceptional." Of course improving by 20 points over the course of a season is exceptional in itself, that's self explanatory.

I haven't bothered reading the whole thread, but I guess you're attempting to make the assertion that Spurs can not break the top 4 on account of their performance last season?

i'm making the assertion it is very unlikely they'll break the top 4.

they're exceptional because of the circumstances prior to their improvement. spurs had a poor start to the season, but spurs' season wasn't as exceptionally poor as everton's in 03/04 or, considering they won the champions league, liverpool in 04/05.

i could quite well be wrong. but betting against the big four would have been fruitless for the past 4 seasons and i can't see it changing now. far more likely is the idea that they could, possibly, not dominate the later stages of the champions league this season. but i still think it'll be 3 english sides and barcelona. depends how real madrid gel.

I just think, instead of proving a point you've undermined it: the circumstances that have contributed to a 20+ improvement, by your own admission, are the replacement of an inept management team, an exceptionally poor perfromance in the season prior, and a diminished involvement/interest in European competition.

Seems like Spurs tick all the boxes...

I think the point being made is that teams are havnig to seriously strengthen just to stay in contention, as the big 4 are continuously improving, and as the stats show, at a faster rate than most other teams.

Spurs have, however, had a massive overhaul rather than gradual building over the past 8 or 9 months.

They are a relatively newly put together team, in one sense, and as such could pose more of a threat than the stats aer showing.

Their goalscoring threat is huge, at the minute, but so too is their ability to ship goals at the back.

it might also be worth looking at goal difference. spurs had a goal difference of 0 last term. the big four regularly have goal differences of +30 at the end of a season. with their strengthening, are they really worth 15 more up top and 15 less at the back?

yes, i think i may have slightly undermined my point. but i still think i have highlighted how much of an achievement it would be to make up more than 20 points. it's only been done 4 times in 13 years! remember the same circumstances arguably hold for manchester city.

the odds rich quoted speak volumes: if you really think the top 4 are going to be challenged, it might be worth a few quid. i think they'll be the same for now.

Regarding goal difference, there have been cases of anomalies, though.

Didn't Derby have a negative, or exceptionally low, goal difference when they were promoted?

2 years ago, Lesda went down with a GD of -3, while Brsitol City got to the play off final on +1.

I believe 5-6 more wins would also have got Leicester a play-off spot, strange how the Championship works.

I really would love to see the day Spurs get sent down a division or two. They really are a team with delusions of grandeur and a majority of fanbase who's arrogance and abuse shown towards players/ex-players/apposing fans etc I find distasteful.

The day that club goes out of business the day football will be a better sport.

You live amongst Spurs fans, don't you?

Contrast that with Salisbury where, yesterday, I was stopped in the street twice by complete strangers to talk about how nice my shirt was and how we should have come away with something on Saturday. 8)

Exactly ;) I work for a Jewish firm where one of the directors is a Spurs fan and so are most of his friends.

I promise you when it comes to Spurs, you hear the same old story season after season on how they are going to finish higher than Arsenal, yet they don't even get close. You'd think they'd learn their lesson and at least have a sense of humility, alas their arrogance does not allow this.

Listen to Talk Sport for a few mornings and evenings and you'll understand what I am saying. The Spurs fans really do have their heads up their proverbial arses.
