Sean Dyche

Try A Little Tenderness
For anyone interested, Dyche appears on the latest edition of Notts TV's Teamtalk show, where he gives a very illuminating insight into life in the Premier League from the perspective of a manager of a so-called unfancied club.

He gives his informed appraisal of Forest's prospects, whilst also providing an affectionate look-back to his time at the City Ground and his progress into coaching and managing following his career as a lower-league journeyman central-defender.

Charlie McParland also appears as usual, but in fairness, he is less insufferable than normal, leaving most of the chat to Dyche.

The show is repeated daily on the channel, but is also available for longer on its online site.

I've heard his balls are bigger than Geoff Woad's.

Will have to give this a watch. I like Dyche and what he achieved with Burnley was remarkable given the resources that he had at his disposal.

He will be under big pressure to play a much better brand of football in his next job if he ends up at a Villa type club, as well as he did at Burnley it was never watchable.

In fairness to SD, he does thoroughly address that common point-of-view about his perceived "style" on the show.

Funny how everyone assumes Dyche is a 1 dimensional manager, he's actually a very competent coach. With Burnley he managed a squad that was out of their depth and kept them at a level which they had no real right to be (for 6 seasons)

Understanding the limitations of your squad and finding a way to utilize it effectively isn't easy. EPL is a results driven league, you can say what you like about the brand of football he implemented but it worked

He'll surprise a lot of people in his next job I think

You don’t keep a motley shower like Burnley in the Premier League for as long as he did, without having something about you as a coach.

Plus Ian Woan is his best mate and sidekick, so that’s a bonus, in my book.

He didn't even vaguely whinge about losing the Burnley job, stating that he happily dealt the hand he was given in terms of budgets whilst he was there.

He gave the impression that he'd love the opportunity to prove he isn't a one-dimensional coach and is clearly still highly influenced by the Brian Clough way of playing - firmly making the point that despite all of the terminology and jargon used by modern-day coaches and pundits, in his view the fundamentals are no different to the way he was coached in the Forest youth set-up as overseen by BC.

He is highly respectful of Steve Cooper, adding that he has accepted invitations from Steve to visit the NDA since he lost his job and moved back to Nottingham with his family.

I hope-beyond-hope that SC is with us for a long, long time, but if circumstances did change for whatever reason, I'd accept Dyche as a replacement in a heartbeat.

I don't think they'll sack Rodgers personally, despite Leicester fans whinging.
Think he'll get a pass for Man U on Thursday but not if they also lose at Brighton.

I think he's a convenient scapegoat for their owners at the moment IMO. If they change manager but don't improve, their fans will start demanding that money be spent. As long as Rodgers remains in charge, Leicester fans will just continue to blame everything on him, which suits their owners.

xG = Expected goals

It's an algorithm that displays the quality of goalscoring chances. So 1 xG = Should be 1 goal.

It is basically a much more simple way of looking at match stats. I know Brentford swear by it.
So shooting ten times from 40 yards presumably has less of an xG than say ten tap ins at the back post.

If that’s right then who rates the chance? Does it factor in where it was on the pitch, how many defenders there were nearby, speed of the pass coming in? And is there an xG for how many you’re likely to concede?

I think the first time I seriously use xG when talking about a game then I’ll quit and watch reruns of Midsomer Murders.
