RIP Terry Venables

Redemption

Chief Eye Roller
Passed away, aged 80.

I've read so many biogs and heard interviews on radio and pospodcasts etc where they say what an innovator he was.

He coached some good teams over the years, including his England team.

Had a colourful out-of-football career too

Can you imagine anyone leaving QPR to go and manage Barcelona?!

I can forgive him for managing Spurs in 1991, and for being the manager of the England side which gave me the worst hangover ever (1st game of Euro 96 when we were awful), because the rest of that tournament we were much better.

R.I.P. El Tel.

Well he did leave something of a legacy. 1996 was arguably the most entertaining England side we had for years, since then expectations rose. That photo of him holding hands lol… typical Clough that…

First Team Squad
He was half of P.B. Yuill, the other half being Gordon Williams, a writer who also ghosted autobiographies of Bobby Moore and Denis Law, amongst others.
I loved Hazell the TV series, they co-wrote. I'll be honest I'd probably think it was shite now, but I was 14 at the time.
RIP Tel. Excellent player and coach too.

Bloody hell I feel old, I remember him as a player.
Although he's known more for his managing/coaching career he was actually a decent player during an era when there was no shortage of quality midfielders around. From what I recall of him, he was a competent passer of the ball and liked a tackle. RIP.

Met him in the late 80s in the Spurs boardroom.

My mate Ted Graham and I were on a long trip, chatting football and it so happened Forest were playing at White Hart Lane in the near future and Ted said "I know (forgotten her name) " who was Irving Scholar's wife/other half. Now I'm not sure how it all happened, but later Ted tells me that it's all fixed up, we've got tickets for the game and an invite to the boardroom after the game.

So we turn up after the game and sure enough, in we go, Ted chatting as if he owns the place, me creeping about hoping nobody spots me before I have my fill of the prawn sandwiches. Then we get chatting to Irving and he takes us into the anteroom to view the model of the new stand they are hoping to build. Then Terry Venables comes in. Ted chats away and introduces me as a Forest fan. "Hello" says Tel, shakes my hand and instantly marches off in the other direction!

Good game though, I think we won or at least didn't lose. I can't really remember the game, but I think Erik Thorsveldt let in a really soft goal right at the beginning of the game, but I might be confusing it with another game when I went with the real gentleman, Ted.

When you’ve got Pep Guardiola lauding your coaching skills, he must have been doing something right.
