Premier league team owners oppose relegation

Got to be the Americans too, they don't like relegation.

Blackburn, Bolton, Wigan, Wolves, WBA and anyone else perilously close to the drop zone.

If this is allowed (and to be truthful it's nowhere near yet) then we may as well give up on the game.

I dunno, f***ing off the Premier League and having a properly competitive football league wouldn't be such a bad thing.

I was thinking something similar. If they did end promotion to/relegation from the Premier League I would prefer it if Forest weren't in it. I'm sure some people on here will think I'm a twat for saying that but it's just my opinion.

No, I'm with you there.

Playing the same teams every season with a guarantee that only the big teams actually win anything ? Sounds like the SPL :shudders:

I completely agree with you.

This would be the end of the game.

The clubs in the football league would start to cease to exist.

Let the Prem go off on their own and the football league turns into the equivalent of the league of Wales.
It would be a disaster.

No wonder my post count..
This would certainly be interesting. The premiership completely overshadows the football league, it can't be denied. I think if they were to do this, they should just completely break off and create a league of their own. Let the premier league have their goal line technology, diving players, ref controversy and the rest.

Scuse my ignorance, but this could be compared to the Engage Super League and Aviva Premiership. Besides the obvious rule difference, both manage to co-exist. While the super league obviously gets a lot less coverage, it's still highly regarded across the country.

Either way, something has to change otherwise the FL will suffocate.

To cite TomHarding's example above, the problem is there are too many full time professional clubs in this country for them all to be successful.

92 league clubs it seems is a few too many.

I would not be surprised if this is - again - just the opening salvo in the aim to get a "Premiership 2" going.

The top division sends up this balloon about closing their league, but then says "oh, go on then, well we will let another 18 or so of you in".

And stuff the rest of you.

Not dissimilar to Germany; two divisions of 18 teams, then below that, regional leagues, many of whose members are part time.

It's funny though because maybe a few of those teams with said owners might get chucked out, for example is it fair that Swansea (not the best example but have only been there 5 mins) retain their place over Leeds or West Ham? (I'd say yes for biased reasons )

With the implementation of FFP this is covertly what may happen anyway, relegated teams with parachute packages and superior streams of revenue might just spend (in more ways the one) a season in limbo before reappearing again. But maybe not.

Let them have a closed league, aslong as the TV money stops going there. But, I do think some want a closed warm place and don't want to let others in and thats a problem though isn't it.

IMO if anything there should be another tier above the national top league for europe's top teams, though how relegations and promotions are decided would be a bit complicated. Would end up all the shit countries teams getting relegated and just having teams from England, Spain and Italy :)

f*** that. That'll be the death of League football.

What's needed is a rebalancing of money from the Premier League across the whole spectrum of football in the country. Premier League Clubs get what, £50m extra in TV revenue than Championship? Can we not just take £3m of that figure from each Premier league club (£60m total) and plough it into different channels (pun not intended).

For example we could have a safety net for smaller clubs who run into trouble - financially managed by FA employed people who work both for the creditors and the club, who aren't interested in rinsing either side for profit. We could have a portion of that money go to develop football schools across the country which work with smaller clubs to provide them players who they can further develop.

The last thing we need is further unfair distribution of funds. If we go this way then English football will die a very quick death.

Does anyone know what the average total attendance for Prem matches is ?

And how would that compare to average total attendances for Champ + L1 + L2 together ?

I think there's a huge number of "non-prem" supporters out there, but TV (Sky ?) don't seem to give a shit.

The non fan viewer is where the casholas are, though. How many people, if indifferent to the teams, would watch Man Utd vs Man City over Forest v Coventry?

Hell, I'm a Forest fan and I would have sooner watch the Man Utd game than the Coventry game at the weekend, and when we played Watford on TV the only interesting thing was the BBC playing 'Where's Wally'.

Thing is, the Premier League has become a soap opera, it's stars are on the front and back pages. They are so analysed and watched that you can't help but take an interest.

from a footballing sense this is a good thing. the security of money would see more clubs taking risks.

from our point of view i'm not sure it is a good thing.

the only thing that will save football is profit distribution, wage caps (not on the players, but as a % of turnover) and elected trustees.

I'm starting to think that the non-so-distant idea of European Super League (at first thought of by G-14 some 10 (?) years ago) isn't so bad. Let the so called 'big teams' f*** off to their inbreeding league and leave the rest alone.

Reminds me of the people that move onto a posh housing estate that was well above them and then moan about other people that move onto the estate. And other such instances.

No promotion or relegation is killing the lower league teams in Rugby League. Being a fan of a team that would of won promotion twice in the last three years to super league, i have to say it's getting a bit boring now. I'm afraid most fat cats just want to get fatter.

tbh rich I couldnt give a toss about the prem and barely ever watch it, I have been to around 10 everton games over last 2 years but I still find it hard to have much interest in them.

where as I tend to watch most championship games on sky and bbc as thats the league we are in and I like to see what we are up against.

the ideal sollution for me would be as follows

2 x 18 team leagues both drawn at random and seeded every year.

top 4 teams from each league at end of season go into a play off and then eventual winner is the prem tittle holder.

bottom teams from each league get relegated.

bellow these 2 leagues would be a regional semi pro league with strict FFP rules to ensure they survive.

money from t.v revenue would be shared amungst the leagues. with 25% having to be invested in youth team set ups

This has got to be one of the most stupidest ideas I've ever heard & would ruin English football.

It wont happen anyway, but the person that even thought about this idea and decided to share it with the media is retarded.
