Pearce/Maldini

When Pearce was in his playing prime he would be talked about as the greatest left back in the world. However a lot of people said Maldini was better.

Now time has passed I'm just wondering what everyone thinks? Was Pearce a better overall player than Maldini?

My 2 favourite players of all time.
They are very different players, but I would say Maldini is the greatest left back ever, and probably the greatest defender of all time to.

He had absoloutely everything, and even at the very end of his career he was still a class above.

He's one of only 2 players whos names I have on the back of football shirts.

Pyscho was a great player, but Maldini was clearly better. Sorry Stuart!

Stuart Pearce to me, will always be the best left back ever! My brain will not allow any thoughts to the contrary!

Maldini was a technically more gifted player - but for pure tribalism and passion then you can't beat Psycho. He wasn't too bad with the ball either - people tend to just remember him for his crunching tackles.

He scored 16 goals one season - not bad for a left back (only bettered by Steve Bruce's 18 goals 15 or so of which were penalties)

Maldini was a much more complete player than Pearce.

Pearce was a better left sided defender (Maldini was right footed but his left was still extremely good) but a a more complete player, you won't find many finer than Paulo. He could play anywhere across the back four, making his Milan debut at right back, obtaining a regular place at left back before finishing his career at centre half.

If you were a centre back, who would you prefer to have at left back?

Psycho would run through a wall for his team would maldini do that...no.both different players in terms of how they played maldini was a very good left back as was pearce but they played in very different leagues i don't think maldini's style of play would have suited the english league as it's far faster than itlay's.psycho would have just killed everyone but saying that him and barasi in his prime would have been some back line.

Two of my favourite players of all time. Don't want to choose.. but, Maldini was the more complete player.

Even on a Forest forum that has a heavy bias towards Pearce, the majority of folk are saying Maldini. I think that answers the question. Still love you though Stuart!!

Miserable git, and proud.

Psycho became great at what he did partly thanks to Dessie's pace and ability to cover.

Psycho for me every time, there again, I will say I am biased, and my son's middle name is Pearce.

If you were a right winger, who would you rather avoid?

I would avoid both - both could dish out a meaty tackle...
Mind you with my pace (Nigel Clough without the football brain) I would be unlikely to escape either.
Heart goes with Pearce; head says Maldini.

OK, so most people are saying Maldini. Fair enough

But would you put Pearce as one of the greatest left backs ever?

For me it would depend on who was playing alongside them, and which team they were up against. Were we to be leading 4-0 from a 1st leg game, I'd be looking to start with Maldini and keep possession. Were we to be 4-0 down from a 1st leg game, I'd be starting with Psycho for passion and bombing forward ability. Both brought something different to the table.

The problem is that due to the lack of fanfare, it's very hard to recall left backs throughout history.

For me, Maldini, Roberto Carlos and Leonardo were certainly of the same standard as Pearce around that era.

There certainly weren't too many more iconic left backs than Pearce over history though.

I forgot Andy Brehme. He was a class full back.

Took free kicks left footed and penalties right footed.

Giacinto Facchetti, Inter/Italy captain and part of Herrera's great 'Catenaccio' team. Ruud Krol, Dutch/Ajax 'Total Footballer'. Then there's Paul Breitner, probably the leftist of all great left backs.

I love Psycho and certainly would put him the world class bracket but you can't really compare him to a legend like Maldini who was part of some of the greatest teams in history.
