Is this best players in terms of your opinion of the player overall, or just the quality of their performance vs Forest. For example, Aaron Davies gave one of the finest performances I've seen from an individual against Forest (albeit one of the worst Forest teams of all time), but overall he's a shocking player!

I was hoping it was against Forest :(

Weirdly I was looking at another thread and thinking of Aaron Davies. That playoff game he was incredible. Made Cohen look just good. Glad we signed them. At least we got Cohen out of that whole debacle.

Best players I've seen overall:

Thierry Henry, David Beckham, Roberto Baggio, Peter Schmiechal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (super sub), Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Stuart Pearce.

The Arsenal team in the early 90's were incredible. I confess I was an Arsenal fan until I was about 9 years old :)

This thread could be over before it starts. Who's going to beat a team with Best, Law, Moore and Banks in!

Very difficult, but I saw Jimmy Greaves terrorise us on numerous occasions in the '60s and would be the first name on any team of opposing players that I'd list.

Johnny Haynes was another class act who stood out to me in the '60s. As did Valencia's Brazilian centre-forward, Waldo, who ran our defence ragged whilst scoring a hat-trick in the Inter Cities Fair Cup-tie at the CIty Ground.

Flying off at a tangent........I was fortunate enough to see nine of the eleven England World Cup wining team, along with many of the squad who never made the famous eleven.

Two who I missed....George Cohen of Fulham and Roger Hunt of scousepool.

All at the City Ground watching Forest playing against them.

Watched George best play for Fulham against us at the CG must of been 75/76 he was coming to the end of his career and the booze had obviously taken its toll.
Stiill to go to school and tell your mates especially the Man u supporting brigade you had seen him play was great. I think Rodney Marsh was playing also.

Not the original OPs point but one of the finest performances I ever saw at the City Ground was Roy Wegerle of QPR on the opening day (probably 1990/91, can't remember exactly). It's one of those off-the-wall performances that no-one really remembers but he tore us apart - no idea what happened to him after!

Remember seeing Gullitt play for Chelsea against us and just feeling privileged to have seen him play live, normally I don't give much credence to opposing players either!

I remember when we had the "Umbro Tournament" in preseason at the City Ground in 1996; us, Chelsea, Man U and Ajax.

That was the Ajax team who'd just won the European Cup, apart from Frank Rijkaard who retired; they had Edwin van see Sar in goal, Michael Reiziger, Danny Blind, Frank de Boer, Edgar Davids, Ronald de Boer, Jari Litmanen, Patrick Kluivert, Nwankwo Kanu and Marc Overmars among others. That was a pretty good side!

I think you are right. My memory of the two days was affected by alcohol.

I've a good recollection of that match. And you're right, Rodney Marsh did play (although I use the term loosely) for Fulham that day as well.

I actually felt some sympathy for the other Fulham players that afternoon, as Best and Marsh effectively treated it as an exhibition game, putting no physical effort in whatsoever, happily indulging themselves with endless 'keepy-ups' and step-overs and shamelessly 'high-fiving' each other constantly. All of this whilst their teammates toiled away in vain to try and stop Forest from cruising to a a comfortable 3-nil win.

The only saving grace was that Bobby Moore was absent through injury that day, as I'm sure he wouldn't have taken kindly to being associated with that type of self-indulgent, unprofessionalism from two of his teammates, regardless of their status in the game.

Good point, add Dennis Bergkamp, so thrilled to see him play live, the finest import of all in my opinion.

Can't really think of many defenders.

But my midfield would be Le Tissier, Zola and Beckham, with Bergkamp, Shearer and Klinsmann up front.

Not much steel, but we wouldn't get near the ball anyway.

Pietro Vierchowod maybe?
According to Marco van Basten and Gary Lineker he'd probably add more than enough steel to cover that midfield and forward line. Against Forest in pre-season 1992 he scored a very good goal after dribbling through the Forest team as I remember, and he was pretty good at getting forwards like that generally too. Very quick too.

Can't remember if I saw Hoddle for sure, but did see some games vs Tottenham in my early years. I did see John Barnes at the City Ground more than once.
Maybe I saw David Seaman playing for QPR, but otherwise I'd have to count live TV games I watched at the time as he played in the great Forest 3-2 game vs Arsenal I remember.

I saw Georgi Kinkladze and Gary McAllister so either of them or even both might be in the best XI I could make, although neither played great those days and Forest had comfortable wins.

I think I saw Tim Flowers playing for Southampton (and Le Tissier I think, maybe Shearer - I'm thinking of a game where Nigel Jemson scored with a chip) in case Seaman isn't eligible for my team.

It's pretty difficult to remember and put together a full side for me! But I was 5 going on 6 when I first went to see Forest (I can check the Forest team on Bridportred and does seem like it was the home game vs Tottenham in 83/84 - Hoddle could well have been playing in that game, and Bryan Robson probably in the famous 3-2 vs Man Utd although I just noticed Strachan but not Robson on the highlights I think).
