On this day in 1974

The 'orrible Geordies invaded the pitch and assaulted our players.

I was there that day; any others there?

Was it really? Good lord.

Was too young to be there but do remember it. Weren't we 1-3 up at the time and the FA had the replay at Everton?

Anyway, an interesting note alabamared.

Edit; Didn't they also go on to win it, Malcolm MacDonald scored in final?

I blew you a kiss when I scored the penalty:LOL: Seriously though it was a school night for me so was'nt there having watched the previous rounds at home to the famous victory over Man city and Portsmouth. I do remember my school was full of hate for the geordies and the ensuing argument of what action the FA should take was ultimately deemed shamefull that we did'nt get the bye we wanted amongst my mates at school

I went with my dad, a day I well never forget. I still hate Newcastle fans (I'm married to one) nearly as much I hate Liverpool fans.

I was too young and can understand the older ones holding a grudge but didn't every other team invade the pitch to get games postponed back then?

Mainly it was Manchester United fans in the 1970's. What leaves a nasty taste in my mouth is, the Geordies attacked our players.

The sheep ran on the pitch to stop Fulham getting promoted in the early 80s, they were winning, Fulham protested but the result stood sheep 1 Fulham 0. Regarding invasions to change the result I cant remember too many, lots of one man invasions and after match stuff going on, I think Meadow lane got wrecked by stretford enders when they were in div 2

I remember when Scarborough were first promoted to the football league in 1987 (Neil Warnock was manager), their first game was at home v Wolves. The wolves hooligans climbed on to the roof of the stand, and then I remember watching them fall through it .

As I recall, it wasn't unusual in the 70's for a game to be held up by fans spilling onto the pitch when, say, a goal was scored. But I'm sure it was unusual to have an invasion of the pitch to the scale of that night and, as rockabilly mentioned, having players physically assaulted before they could get out the way.

Fighting in the stands brought about terrace segregations. There was a time when, at many grounds, you could have walked all the way around during a game if you wished to.

When did perimeter fencing come into play in this country and what brought it about? Does anyone recall?

I was there when this happened,I travelled on the coach with 50 plus trickies but came back with only 30 because they had decided to meet them on the pitch for a rook and got locked up,we didn’t leave Newcastle till after ten waiting for them to be released but it didn’t happen

Stoke City introduced a 'moat' at the Victoria Ground in 1974, to prevent fans getting on to the pitch. I think Forest had their fences erected in the 1978/79 season.

I remember that. One of the Fulham players got kicked near the corner flag.

Remember Derby players being punched to the ground at Millwall in the playoffs as well.

The funniest vision was Brian Stein sprinting to the tunnel in record time when Luton played Millwall.

Was there too, we were 3-1 up when the morons could take no more after Pat Howard was sent off for protesting. Remember them dancing in front of us after they had kicked Dave Serella. The gits also managed to stab me in the leg with a fork!!, on the way back to the bus, maybe they had run out of knives? Took ages to clear the pitch and we know what happened next, FA bottled kicking them out of the competition and we had to endure 2 trips to scouse land before losing to a bloody Malcom McDonald goal. Only bonus was they got stuffed in the final by the red scouse...
