Anyone taking the train to Liverpool will find themselves going through the Williamson Tunnel as they approach the terminus at Lime Street. The Tunnel is hewn out of a Sandstone Escarpment that was pushed up by the Bowland Glacia that shaped the geology of the Mersey basin.
I'm not sure if that happened before or since Forest last won at Anfield* in the league.
Local trains coming through the tunnel typically stop at Edge Hill Station on the way in. But back in time, this was the terminal station for the first intercity line in the UK between Liverpool and Manchester and powered by Stephenson's Rocket Locomotive - when at full power, the steam was said to smell of vinegar and is thought of as the origin of the phrase 'vinegar strokes'. I only raise this fact as "getting off at Edge Hill" is a scouse euphemism for pulling out before climax - something especially pertinent for the Catholic residents of the city. While some Forest fans have metaphorically pulled out already, I'm of the opinion there's still something to play for.
A Loss here is the most probable outcome. Cooper should use it as a pseudo-friendly to prepare for the last 5 games, although the atmosphere between rival fans will be more than hostile.
Liverpool are having a shit season based on their expectations. That does offer a chink of weakness in their armour. Can Cooper find a way to take anything from this game? No one expected we'd beat them at the City Ground yet we did. So maybe there could be some magic here?
* It was 1969, by the way.
