Perhaps most importantly, if that story is true then we can stop blaming the specialist set piece coach for us being crap at set pieces because he's not responsible!

You're right it is an important point. And perhaps thats why Paul Taylor got this story because his reputation was taking a shoeing with every set piece goal we conceded.

Taylor probably gets his info from a kindly old lady who watches out her window all day

I’d have loved to have seen Brian Clough respond to the appointment of a set piece coach.
Why is there a f*****g coach for everything in life nowadays-I guess that there will soon be a
specialist needed to have a dump.

I would have been in full agreement with you up until we got into the PL because after watching last nights match the dogs in the street could tell you what team had a set piece coach and what clowns didn't. Antonys effort off the bar in the opening few mins was a clear sign that they actually work on being inventive. Look at Arsenal, over half of their goals have come directly from set pieces. They may play lovely carpet passing football but when they get a set piece they have numerous plans that are paying off majorly.

Our plan? Corner lads, whip it in near post Morgs! Deep free kick? Get a big man at the back like Cookie against Liverpool last season and try to hit him. Throw in? MOUSSAAAAAAAA. They kinda worked last April for 2/3 games. Now i'm terrified of the inevitable counter attack opportunity we give teams from defending them.

Its comical and worst of all for me is its a massive reason why we are were we are. Low block or lovely triangle vertical possession football means f*** all when we are absolutely bricking it everytime someone gives a free away in our own half or the ball rolls out for a corner.

Are modern players incapable of thinking for themselves?
Has anyone considered that we really aren’t very good at football?

Just read Paul Taylors article in the Athletic (i know i know) but he mentioned something very interesting and it both explains and confuses me as to what the hell is going on in training. Simon Rusk, our set piece coach that Coops wanted and brought in just before his sacking, is in fact not coaching our set pieces anymore. Nuno trusts his own men, none of whom are a dedicated set piece coach. Rusk was apparently really liked by the players and were already seeing benefits before his step down in role, that was months ago.

Now a) how did Paul get that info? b) if true, is Nuno perhaps rethinking his coaching set up and c) what the hell is the Big Man thinking when he wanted Gianni Vio as set piece coach but gave in to Coops for Simon Rusk, only to then hire a manager who doesn't use him yet watches on as we concede the most basic goals from set pieces in game after game after game while offering sweet f*** all in our attacking set pieces?
Only just read it and I just had to chuckle at this part...

Forest now find themselves potentially needing to find an alternative role for Rusk, as well as still needing a solution to their set-piece fragility.

...
only Forest could bring in a set piece coach to address set-piece problems....and not be using said set-piece coach to address set-piece problems 😆

That's the owners prerogative, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a trigger happy owner pull his trigger.

That's different to "I'd f*** Nuno off in the summer, regardless of what happens if I'm honest." though.
It is different, but I don't have any sentimentality towards Nuno. I did with Steve and probably to the point where if we'd been relegated, I'd have still wanted to keep him. With those rose tinted glasses off, Nuno doesn't do it for me and I feel that his inability to address our set piece and defensive situations is potentially going to be our undoing.

I wasn't bowled over when he got appointed, but think that was more to do with Steve going.

I don't think the current recruitment regime has any remote clue about trying to build a team with a mix of different attributes, mental awareness and decisiveness just a few of them.

We seem to focus heavily on players with good play attributes, the designer ones like Murillo or Danilo, who have a wow factor. But deeper players required to glue sides together, like McGovern, McKenna, Phillips etc. wouldn't get a look in here - do the Greeks even consider teams need leaders & organizers etc. ?

Excluding financial focus, what I'd say recruitment should be prioritizing....
  • Footballing ability
  • Physical stature
  • Mental strength and awareness
  • Quality and strength of character
  • Ambition

What I suspect they are prioritizing...
  • Footballing ability
  • Reputation
  • Agent connections
  • Instagram followers

"Didn't lay a glove"? We scored twice and should have had a third through Elanga. Last season when we didn't lay a glove on a team we really didn't lay a glove on them, scored none and didn't look like scoring any. There's a huge difference.
Fair enough if you are happy just to have scored 2 goals in a 4-2 defeat where we never looked like threatening to take anything from the game and defensive errors were a plenty.

I expect more though and I am sure in time Nuno will deliver.

The nagging feeling that people are happy to expect less from Nuno still lingers though.

In fairness to Rusk, he was manager of the England under 19s and apparently did brilliant work at Brighton I think when he was appointed I saw him linked with Solly March and Ben White progressing at Brighton so he probably has more ability and skills in youth development than telling people to try and mark people, head the ball away from goal and be ready for the second ball when defending and head it at the goal when attacking (Beating the first man would be lovely too).

We do need to get better at set peices but I find it bloody annoying when Villa do anything remotely attached to a set piece and they focus on that long haired guy like he's some kind of genius when all that's happened is that the ball ended up in the net off someone's backside from a deflected shot that the keeper missed.

Honeymoon period was brilliant. Great sex straight away.

I still think Nuno's a good manager but I'm not sure we've moved on that much.

We’re attacking more but we’ve reverted to type. Especially with the defensive mistakes and set piece nonsense.

(I might have beat Streetfighter 2 a few times as well thinking about it, but that might have been following significant SNES practice)
„E. HONDA WINS“

If I could count the hours I spent playing Street Fighter 2 on the SNES; well, it would be a lot.
