ANTCLIFFE TREBLE AS POLICE SCRAPE THROUGH IN PAA
Jeff Gubbins, 5 November 2008 13:01

NATIONAL POLICE ASSOCIATION CUP 2nd ROUND

TUES 4th NOV 20087.00pm – Brian Wakefield Memorial Ground, Lenton Lane

NOTTS POLICE 4 WEST MERCIA CONSTABULARY 3

A Richard Antcliffe hat trick helped Notts Police venture into the third round of the National Police (PAA) cup under the floodlights at Bilborough Pelican’s ground this evening. Police were denied the services of Mark Bainbridge, Chris Mercer and Steve Corry who are all ineligible to play in the competition. Also missing were Karl Bainbridge along with suspended duo Broadhead and McCarthy. Simon Ward was available and Police drifted in re-enforcements in the form of veteran Chris Young and Ben Rosser who plays on Saturdays for Dinnington Town . Collopy was rested to the bench as Richard Taylor earned a deserved start on the right side of midfield and Andy Wilson and Dan Sloane completed the changes to the side which had fought back to draw with Boots on Saturday.

On a wet foggy evening Police were caught cold when a mistake on the edge of the box allowed West Mercia to take an 8th minute lead. Ben Rosser then began to take the game to the opposition with strong athletic running down the left side. He was involved in the Notts equalizer tormenting the defence before Gary MERCER latched onto the move and hammered the ball under the keeper form inside the box inside 15 minutes. It was clear however that the visitors whom we knew little about possessed an attacking threat especially from their No 10 and it was his run and cross from the right which sent them back in front as an unmarked midfield player headed in at the far post. Despite falling behind for the second time it was apparent that Notts had more than one player capable of getting beyond the defence. Ady Beech, Dan Sloane and again Rosser were all involved in the move to release ANTCLIFFE who supplied a deft finish for the first of his treble. With Notts now well on top ANTCLIFFE provided a third on the half hour with another smart finish as Police once again opened up the defence down the left. Notts had also by this stage settled down defensively with Young and Wilson getting to know each other and McDonagh looking composed at right back.

Half Time – Police 3 West Mercia2

Police survived an early scare at the beginning of the second but then quickly resumed control. West Mercia had to thank their keeper for a string of fine saves before ANTCLIFFE stabbed home his third and Notts’ fourth goal after a bit of a scramble with still over a third of the game remaining. Having given themselves the desired breathing space from this point onwards it seemed that Notts should have been able to enjoy the rest of the game. However this was simply not the case as the threat from Sloane and Rosser disappeared and the side sat back inviting pressure from opposition who seemed to be tiring badly at one point. Police replaced Antcliffe with Collopy and Andy Wilson with Simon Ward but this wasn’t enough to prevent West Mercia creeping back into the game with a deflected effort over Parlatt’s head after more sloppy deep defending. Credit must be given to the opposition who threw everything at us in search of an equalizer but it has to be said also that Notts wasted a number of opportunities themselves to make the game safe. Tony Ward then replaced Beech and worked hard with the rest of the team to preserve the lead and send the team into the third round where we will meet the winners of Derbyshire and the West Midlands .

All in all a scrappy performance in a match that we should have won more convincingly. Not to take anything away from the opposition who competed throughout and have the disadvantage of not playing with each other week after week. Police matches are always competitive and never easy but if we face the West Midlands in the next round we will have to work much harder and defend better as a team if we are to progress further.

Many thanks to Swifty and all at Pelican for the use of their excellent facilities and after match refreshments and we hope their invitation extends into the next round which should be early in the New Year.
