I suppose broadcasters etc are contractually obliged to refer to the full name occasionally, but no one else bothers.

Aren't managers contractually obliged to refer to the sponsor? I vividly remember Roy Hodgson saying "We love our Barclays Premier League" in his press conference after his last game as manager at WBA.

If anyone has any doubt about whether the average fan pays attention to the names given to leagues you don't have to look any further than the fact that so many people still insist on calling The Premier League the Premiership, even though it stopped being called that 6 years ago!
