As a therapist, I usually subscribe to the notion that actions today can be associated with events of the past. However, this only extends so far and never translates as sympathy. I've worked with sex offenders and most have suffered abuse themselves. Often horrific abuse by trusted elders. The skill is separating the offence from the narrative. A nonce is a nonce, is a nonce. Simple as that.

I work around a lot of students who have multi, complex issues. In some eyes this creates a "it's not their fault" mentality, I don't believe that, in fact me treating them the same as others tends to remove the worse behaviours. If it's not acceptable, it's not acceptable no matter who you are nor what issues you have.

I didn't think I'd ever see someone protecting a nonce.

I condemn totally what Shipperley has done and I am totally aware of the potentially damaging effect this behaviour has on victims.

However, he is still a human being and should be treated as such. If we resort to mob law and set out to punish him ourselves without trial we are no better than him.

A man, much greater than me, once came upon a group of men who were about to stone a woman to death for committing adultery. He said to the men “ let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” The men looked into themselves and , one by one, put down their stones and walked away.

If others don't want to do that fine. Me personally, as a decision I make for me alone & my own actions alone, have just taken a step back and questioned if there's more to it.
