I like this bit:

"City manager Roberto Mancini came to the conclusion that he did not have the right personality for professional football, and sent him out on a season-long loan to Leicester City"

Giving someone £40k per week at that age without having actually achieved anything in the first team is asking for this kind of thing though.

It is, and it's surprising to me that type of thing doesn't happen more often - or maybe it does, just not quite so spectacularly.

Look at our own Lewis McGugan, many feel he isn't making the most of his talent, but he's only playing for a second division club in old money and has never really established himself in the first team at this level, but is still earning a wage most of us can only dream of.
Footballers - in the top two leagues anyway - get too much too early and too easily. It's no wonder some of them at best find it difficult staying hungry and amitious, at worst go completely off the rails.

Yup, it would take real mental (and physical) discipline to go on to strive to achieve what players ought to.

The thing that wrankles with me is the fact he got a 'pay off'. I mean how many of us in the 'normal' world would have received a pay instead of a P45 after 3 years of being a twat.

Not normal life though is it, if City tried to insert any sort of clause or working conditions in line with the real world into his contract he'd simply f*** them off and sign for someone else who was willing to give him a cast iron big money contract.

Them's the facts.

Exactly.Fair play to Michael for still being alive though, if I was given that money per week I'd be dead in about a year through either alcohol poisoning, drug abuse or suffocating in an orgy of supermodels.

Good advert for players being paid a living wage with the balance in a trust until they're older.

Stupid money at 18 would have detrimental effects on most of us.

All of us if we worked on a contract and the contract owner decided to go another way. Unless weight is written into his contract then he's not in breach of it and the club a bound to honour it or pay it off. Same thing wold happen if you were on a time based contract painting houses.

It would'nt have to specify weight as he was clearly not capable of carrying out the basics of actually playing football due to drink and other issues in his life, if anyone turned up under the influence of drink or substances you cannot carry out your contract and would most likely fall under HASAWA, so you are clearly in breach of that work contract, which would apply to any 'normal person living in the real world.

I don't think it's ever stated he turned up to work drunk.

It's the grey area of controlling what you do outside of work. If you get drunk on a Saturday afternoon, should you expect to be fired come Monday morning?

For those saying "what an idiot", there may be more to this story than originally reported:

Johnson told the Manchester Evening News: "I have been attending the Priory Clinic for a number of years now with regard to my mental health and would be grateful if I could now be left alone to live the rest of my life. I am more disappointed than anyone, but that's the way it goes."
