Our business will conclude soon then, as we can only have about 5 loans in a match day squad and we won’t spend a penny on transfers.

You noticed to,we keep saying we have signed this player and that player, how many of them are actually ours.

I’m not a massive fan of loans in general to be honest, I’d much rather a loan had optional fee at the end so there is actually a chance we sign them. At this rate we will be in the exact same position next summer and have to scramble for players, it’s never ending.

To be honest, I can’t see us signing anyone until we either get the high earners off the wage bill or sacrifice one of the few players we have with some talent.

I think the Covid situation has forced a lot of the club's hands this year, but in general totally agree. How can you build a side around players who only have a small percentage of their future invested in the club? :dunno: OK, so it worked once for Watford. An exception.

I'm hoping that we get by this next year, and when the likes of Bong, Artur & Jenks (probably 3 of our biggest earners still) are off the wage bill next year we can actually start a proper rebuild.

I think this has been the plan all summer, and like you previously said, their hand has been forced due to COVID. Plug gaps in the squad with loan players, take pot shots on trying to sign promising youngsters for lowish fees and if they happen, brilliant, if not try our luck on the next one.

Don’t particularly rate him, but at least he’s a left-back and he’s not Bong

„Well at least he’s not Gaetan Bong“ is the most Forest reason for signing a player, ever.

I feel that's the plan Alf. To add to those you mention, the likes of Grabban and Figueiredo also come to the end of their deals.

I expect that the January window may provide a hint of longer-term recruitment intentions.

Looking through that long list of transfers SSN are currently scrolling through down the side of their page (in between several, what seems like, hours of adverts) and in the Championship section there are a few "undisc" transfers scattered amongst a great pile of frees or loans, but in the League 1 & 2 listings there are few if anything other than frees or loans.

Showing to me that some clubs are being very canny in their selections, but still only taking in players for minimal expenditure. And most of those "undisc" transfers are parachute clubs, I reckon.

Yeah Covid has definitely effected it somewhat but the few years prior to this is the main concern, if we didn’t have people on millions a year who don’t contribute we would have some room to bring players in.

A lot of us talk about a playing identity but the team itself can’t have an identity when we have a player for 6 months and they disappear, there’s no connection to any of the players which is probably one reason people cling onto Carvalho.

I hope next year we’re starting without Bong, Arter, Jenks and Grabban. Im glad Grabbs has actually contributed to us but he’s going to be on a good wage and his performances will only get worse from here.

I’d chuck Lolley into that too but people get angry when I say he’s finished

I've felt for a while that the club are looking to scrape survival with as minimal spend as possible. It's a very high risk strategy though, which has put us in rather a big mess.

There's clearly an element of "That'll do" beginning to creep in. We've gone from Buchanan and the seemingly classic Dane model to someone who can probably do a job for a year. Pragmatically it probably makes sense, the last thing we want to do is go back to the bomb-boys and filling the squad with inadequate crap, but we're clearly not good enough and the squad has gaping holes so a few who can improve - even if they're not long term bets - are probably needed purely for survival. It's going to be a case of improving on Bong and not putting youngsters who don't even play that position in.

Feels that way, doesn't it? I think any signings we make before the end of the window will be like this; just doing the bare minimum to put out a team that might be able to stay up.

Obviously, I hope you're wrong about Lolley, but I suspect you're possibly right.

I agree with both of you. From what I've seen his condition isn't going to get better properly without surgery which basically cuts the leg muscle open and that's clearly going to have other impacts on his ability to run and kick a ball. The other thing they can do which it seems from what he said last year they are, is managing it by rest and injections, which presumably only stops it from getting worse as quickly.

Even then clearly there's the potential that he may feel tightness or just not as confident running as he was before which is a big part of his game.

Think he's a cracking lad and was a brilliant player for us when he was fit so it's a massive shame.

On a separate point, 'undisclosed' fees should be outlawed. Things like this should be made public. I know it has to be properly accounted for anyway behind the scenes, but it annoys me.

I am quietly confident about this transfer. I imagine it’ll be a loan with an option at the end as Sheff U look to change the squad
