Night, night all... sleep tight and don't let the bed-bugs bite :)

Tuesday 2nd April 2024: Nottingham Forest v Fulham (Premier League; Kick Off 19:30):

Why can’t we play with such passion and skill every time we play? And why can’t Nuno pick that starting XI to start every game, because we were well balanced and threatening for much of the 90 minutes?

We started at pace and Hudson-Doi, MGW and Elanga were simply too much for Fulham’s defence to cope with. On 9 minutes MGW set CHO free on the left side of the box. I thought that the chance was to go begging as CHO checked inside his defender rather than trying a left foot shot. However, the jink opened up the path to goal, and CHO curled a low shot past the flailing dive of Leno, and into the far bottom corner. Chances fell then to CHO, to Wood and to Elanga, but good stops by the Fulham keeper and the ball flashing past the outside of the post saw Forest denied.

Fulham were well and truly rattled though, and a flowing move starting with Murillo, on to MGW and then Danilo saw Chris Wood hit a vicious drive from 25 yards leaving Leno stranded. Flat footed, the net bulging: 2-0 and only 20 minutes played.

Forest were rampant and on 30 minutes Marco Silva threw on 3 substitutes to replace The worst performers from his starting XI. While this steadied the ship for Fulham, it was only temporary respite. MGW was playing his finest and he capped the first half performance with a 3rd Forest goal, a sweet strike into the bottom corner following some simply breathtaking play by Murillo, Danilo and MG himself.

Half time and Forest 3-0 up.

Everyone around me expected something of a response by Fulham as the 2nd half kicked off. For 4 minutes they pushed Forest deep into our own box, and from a corner they pulled a goal back – yet again our weakness at defending a set piece being our Achilles Heel. Contrary to previous experiences this season, Forest did not let this set-back worry them. True, Fulham had wrested the initiative, and the second half was not a repeat of the first. Sels made a couple of excellent reflex saves to deny the opposition, and the bar and post came to our rescue on 2 occasions, but they were after Neco Williams had seen his curling shot from 18 yards out deflected onto the Fulham cross-bar. Origi, on for Hudson-Odoi hit a rasping, rising shot that flashed inches over the cross bar, and in injury time he was in acres of space but his low shot curled agonisingly wide of the far post. The lad really needs a goal to give him a confidence boost!

The final whistle came and the Forest fans who had been loud and proud all match raised the roof in salute of the lads who played their hearts out and secured a much needed 3 points. Pre-match Forza Garibaldi mounted a colourful Trent End display, and it was fitting that the main banner was a picture of MGW, who served up his best performance of the season, and was rewarded with my MOTM award, after a thrilling game where the combined team effort was at the root of our success. That, plus some audacious individual skills from MG, from Danilo, from Murillo, from Aina, from Wood and really from every man who took to the field.

Player Ratings:

Sels: 7 – some vital saves to keep us in it after Fulham scored their only goal early in the 2nd half;

Williams: 7 – played himself into the ground by the end, and was desperately unlucky to see his goal-bound shot get a slight deflection that made it smash against the face of the cross-bar;

Omobamidele: 7 – kept his head, and timed his tackles well to avoid silly fouls and worse;

Murillo: 7 – he and Omo look to be a decent central back partnership, despite not having the height of some of tonight’s opponents;

Aina: 7 – teased and tantalised down Forest’s left wing, but still managed to acquit himself defensively;

Danilo: 7 – some lovely skill, and 100% effort throughout;

Yates: 6 – not one of Ryan’s better games, but he captained the side with authority;

Hudson-Odoi: 8 – took his goal brilliantly and teased his full-back constantly;

Gibbs-White: 10 – what a privilege to witness a full 10 out of 10 performance… possibly even 11 ;

Elanga: 7 – so pleased to see Elanga starting again, and playing an important role in setting up attacks, and nearly scoring;

Wood: 7 – he doesn’t score many from outside the box, so tonight’s long distance strike was a bit of a collector’s item!.

Substitutions:

Origi (on for CHO): 7 – lovely first touch, and fights hard but boy does he need a goal to restore his confidence;

Reyna (on for MGO): 7 – improving with more game time;

Toffolo (on for Aina): 7 – as Aina tired, and Traore started to cause some problems, Toffo was brought on and put a stop to Traore’s trickery;

Dominguez (on for Elanga): 7 – with Fulham dominating the 2nd hald for long periods, Nick was brought on to add a bit more bite to midfield.

Conclusion: a superb win tonight that does ease some of our relegation worries – let’s hope Arsenal win against Luton tomorrow. If we can sneak at least a point at White Hart Lane on Sunday, It will have been a decent return for the first week of April. Nuno went with the right starting XI, and his substitutions were well made.

And for the Foodies out there, tonight a return to the Bridgford fish Bar, but I rang the changes with a battered sausage and chips.
Can’t beat Captain’s log on a morning can ya ? 😍

Unsure how I feel about the full sausage disclosure. 🤔

How nice to roll into work the day after a win.

As many have said, everyone played great. The one that surprised me most was Danilo. He'd had some pretty ineffective performances this season and I admit to letting out a "Jeez, why not Dom?" when the line up was announced. He played a blinder though. Not just technically brilliant in the first half but physically superb in the 2nd. A few times I had to double take as he was launching himself into tackles and blocks. I'd not seen that side of him before and loved it.

CHO is a confidence player. After that goal you could see how much he was demanding the ball. Willing to take on the man and cut inside whenever he had it.

Sels had another stormer. His world class tip around the post in the 2nd half when we'd just conceded and were under the cosh was crucial.

That might not be the template to use at Spurs, but certainly is for when Wolves visit the week after.

Sensational first half - we could have had five or six in that 45. Even if we did the bloke behind me would still be panicking!

Special mention for MGW who was the best player on the pitch when he was on - electric performance, his use of space and close control really are something special... I actually don't know how he does some of the things he does; he makes it look so effortless at times. Incredible performance - credit to him.

Did having runners either side help him? Probably - it was nice to see Danilo back for that too - he's such a talent that lad. I've waxed already about him in his thread, but he did all the good things he does last night, minus the possession giveaways that sometimes dog his game (due to his keenness to shift it forward usually).

Really helps having a 'proper' left back too - thought Aina was outstanding last night, and such an upgrade from Toffolo. We need that balance - Williams has made the right side his now and Aina can battle with Tavares (if he's ever fit) for the left... He can probably win that battle if he cuts out the switch offs - he had a couple last night but recovered well.

To a man I thought we were superb - I could wac lyrical about the lot of them, though it would be a long old ramble. If anyone struggled it was Elanga, though he almost got in several times and when he did he was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Added that balance too, and allied Callum to do his thing, which he does so well, on the other side.

Performances like that just highlight why I want to see this side kept together - relegation would strip us of seeing one of the most talented young forest sides I can remember seeing develop further. So much potential , and there's just so much to like when we get it right... Hope that three points goes a long way towards securing our status, and that the performance level drives us on to win more between now and the season's end. Come on you beautiful reds!

So many positives from last night. The tempo, the skill level, the desire (especially Danilo and MGW), and the two-footed goalkeeper. marvellous result, performance and occasion. Well done Forest, and well done Forza garibaldi.
One sour note however, a few idiots booing Sangare as he was warming up on the touchline. Pathetic, stop it, he'll be a major player for us next season, give him some love.

VAR for not even looking at the Neco (soft) penalty shout
They did check it, they can the while the game continues. The commentary confirmed this. They don't have to stop the game. I, for one, would prefer more VAR cheks to happen this way.

A word on the ref: shite. How we didn't get a pen, or apparently even a var check on the Williams foul I'll never know. Standard f***ing rubbish premier league refereeing... It's easier to take when you're winning though!

My lad's done well this year: first game the win v Sheffield United, second a 2-2 draw in the cup v Blackpool and third time's the charm for the best first half performance since, well, since when? Might see about getting him to the man city game for three wins in three PL games!

Second half was great too - defended well as a unit with a two goal cushion and could have had as many as they could. Lots of nerves at 3-1 from the crowd, but we kicked in at the right moments - thought the city ground was proper rocking from the off last night. My boy had fingers in his ears on numerous occasions.

What a night!

I thought he was OK. Let the game flow for both sides, which helped us in the first half, imho from the comfort on my Telly.

Only decision i thought was questionable was when CHO cleared out by Bassie. But on replay, I still would have bit was a closer call.
For me he was as bad as they all are - started ok and went downhill from there.

I haven't seen replays yet - was it a pen? Looked stonewall again from my seat on that side. I was a long way from the CHO one but that seemed an obvious but of cynicism?

My annoyance was more from the ignoring of several fouls around the half way line to let play go on for the opposition. Poor.

I was pissed off that the ref let them take out CHO and pulling Wood back very obviously. Blame VAR for not even looking at the Neco (soft) penalty shout when they do check if in ourbox.
VAR do check all possible pens. The commentators are plugged into the feed and confirm when the check is complete. That Nico one was a tickle under the boot at most, nowt really worth checking.

Neco dived, he tried to do what Anthony Gordon did, but there was no contact.

Oliver was good but there was a few late kicks after the ball had gone by Fulham he failed to even acknowledge and there was one time where he played advantage but the advantage was lost due to the foul and he didn’t take it back which was poor.

Wasn’t as bad as the ref v Palace though (Kavanagh). Palace defenders in trouble jumping to the floor couldn’t wait to give them.

Neither really had anything massive to do. Makes a nice change to not have any controversy and we’ve won points playing football.

If we could flip the set pieces about we’d be flying.

Was an excellent performance - could have been 5-0 up at halftime. What perhaps impressed me most however, was how we didn't crumble after they scored right after half time. As soon as it went in, I feared the worst and assumed one our of famous inexplicable capitulations was just around the corner - but it wasn't.

Sure, it took some desperate defending at times and a terrific save from Sels to keep them at arms length - and we are so vulnerable from set pieces it borders on the absurd - but we held out.

Picture the scene. Busy bar in Puerto del Carmen. Boards outside advertise that they’re showing no fewer than 5 live games simultaneously on different screens. Arrive to find two screens showing ahem…a lower league fixture from Fratton Park. Myself and 4-5 other Forest fans request one of the two screens to be switched to PREMIER LEAGUE football.
Cue ensuing treat for fans of lower league football to be able to enjoy the sight of a neighbouring rival banging in several goals, and taking a step towards PREMIER LEAGUE safety.
The fact that the lower league stream froze on no fewer than 3 occasions and had to be restarted was a surprisingly enjoyable bonus.
