Martin O'Neill

Spaceman

Floating in space.
Robbo said he wasn't that interested in getting back into football because of the ludicrous amounts of money being paid to average footballers who then swan about in fancy cars and sit on their arses on the bench quite happy to pick up their pay cheques each month.

Mark Hughes:is being mentioned, but he spends an awful long time imposing himself at a club and Sunderland need a quick fix.

Steve McClaren: Sunderland need motivating and we saw his time here, he couldn't motivate a starving man to eat. Ellis Short said yesterday of sticking together this could have the opposite effect with the fans with Schteve is appointed.

Paulo Di Canio: is a character and I would say his persona matches what Sunderland need.

My new book has a chapter analysing O'Neill's management career and Robbo's contribution to that. It is absurd that he has been sacked at this point. No one could have done more to keep Sunderland up and he has been been very unlucky with injuries. Did the owners really expect a win against Man Utd today?
This is precisely why Robbo would not join Martin at Sunderland. In the Premiership money is God.
Robbo did go to Sunderland and looked over the training set up but did not join Martin there. He explains why in 'Those Forest Men.'
That plug brought me a little nipple thrill. Book doesn't even exist yet. I can have years of man boob fun out of this. Once published we can go down below.

Sunderland have been, by quite some distance, the worst team to watch in the prem this season. Really awful.

He's spent a fortune as well, so its not like hes had to try to work on a shoestring

It is mental to sack him though, should have had at least part of next season

Wouldn't want MON at Forest. Ruined Villa and was awful at Sunderland. Suprised it took as long as it did for them to get rid. Billy all the way for me. Can see Pearson going if he doesn't get Leicester into the play offs. MON would be a popular choice for them.

Di Canio is bonkers. Wouldn't want him anywhere near my club.

I think some of teh comments about his time at Villa are a bit off. Villa became a good team while he was there, near CL, and they fell apart after he left.

Having said that, he's done at awful job at Sunderland. They are brutal to watch, no creativity in the side whatsoever. O'Neill had plenty to spend and he's bought poorly. It hasn't gone well at all. The timing isn't very good, so it would seem a motivator would be the safe choice to keep them up.

Maybe Joe Kinnear? He seemed to hate Newcastle when he was there.

Yes he spent big on Fletcher and Johnson, but isn't Fletcher there top scorer? Would you really turn down the chance to sign Johnson? I think his main problem was not bringing in some decent defenders. People like Bramble should not be playing Premiership football.

Fletcher is good, but what did they pay....14 million? Not worth that much.

Benteke cost Villa half that, and they'll sell him for upwards of 20 million soonish. So, they got a better player, and an asset to pawn in due time.

Wes Brown and Titus Bramble as a central D pairing. That almost seems like an arrestable offence.

Agreed about Bramble and Brown. Can't believe people keep employing Bramble. Has always been a joke.

Lol look where they are now! And last time I checked its the chairmen who signs cheques not the manager.

Yes look where they are now. They haven't recovered from where MON left them. MON pissed loads of money and left them in a piss poor state after walking out at short notice. Lerner isn't popular either mind.

O'Neill is popular with large sections of the sports media because he is a bright bloke, a decent pundit and generally gives them something they can write about. That's partly why he is so heavily rated, they form the general public's opinion. Particularly for those people not directly watching him manage their club.

It's the same with that illiterate thundercunt Rednapp. The press promote him because he gives good copy and maintains open communication. The fact he has so far just about bankrupted three clubs while simultaneously building up property around the UK's most expensive residential beachfront appears secondary in their view. Even his dog has its own offshore bank account.

But that is stupid logic. Benteke was a massive gamble who might not have paid off. Fletcher has a decent record in struggling sides, so much less of a gamble. Yes they paid over the odds for him but he is still their top scorer.
