Poor start to the season (like many others) but put in a really strong performance last night and for me showed enough to make me think he should be in instead of Cook. He just has a bit more to his game.

would have Boly than cook or worrall , there's isn't a lot between cook and worrall , our middle of defence as a whole is still ponderously slow and pray that niakhate is back up and running once the wc is over.

Very nitpicky but the only thing that annoyed me was he did his best Matt Mills impression first half. Worrall sloppily gave the ball away (for the second time in about 5 mins), Boly shut down the attack & JW runs over to have a go at him and Boly & Hennessey's reaction was along the line of "What?"

Don't mind giving your team-mates a volley, we all know you need that in your team but it seemed OTT when the reason that sequence happened was Joe in the first place.

Worrall gave the ball away 3 or 4 times in the first half trying to pass out of defence. You simply can't afford to be doing that at this level, so based on midweek for me Boly has just snuck ahead of Joe to replace Cook.

Bolys performance seemed to go under the radar with a lot of people, presumably because of the score, the way we played and because Lingard and Mangala were so good.

Make no mistake Boly was the reason we shut Spurs out so well, his positioning was so good. It wasn't just good in terms of his own man but he did that in such a way that he could also cover.

Boly played his way in to the team ahead of Worrall for me.

I'd put them both in. Keep the defence the same as the Spurs game. Looked solid and allowed us to play a bit further up the park.

It is the old chestnut for defenders, those that do the best work, you never really notice, because they aren‘t making a panicked clearance or desperate last-second lunge, they have effectively cleared any danger before it can become, well, dangerous.

Desmond Sinclair Walker was like that - he would just snuff-out opposing teams‘ attacks, almost before they got into dangerous areas.

So nothing has changed then. That's what Joe was doing early on in the season and presumably why Cooper decided to drop him. You can't give the ball away in such dangerous positions and expect to get away with it.

And then if they did get by him, he caught them up with his pace.

The guy was that quick you name the two times he was out paced.... once by Marc Overmars and once by Lars Elstrup.

And for the Overmars instance, Des was partly concussed.

He needs to get stronger for me, he is too easily outmuscled by PL strikers. Played well but he doesn't seem to have the physical presence of our other CB's. I would play him for his other qualities but he should be on the weights over the world cup break.

Yeah, bit suss on the peno though which highlighted his failings imo. Still, id rather him in the side than not, weak spots and all; he's forest.
You can't blame him for the peno imo his contact was minimal and zahas position was foul him or he gets a clear shot on goal, Worrall gambled with little choice and it worked. Had it been see as a glaring error I can't see cooper keeping Worrall on for the 90

Any Time Now

Jack Armstrong
7 clearances
4 interceptions
2 tackles
84% pass accuracy
4 acc. long balls
2 ground duels won
3 aerial duels won
6 recoveries
1 shot

Great performance, didn't step a foot wrong besides the penalty (Wozza will be the first to admit Zaha did him up like a christmas tree for that one)

I haven't seen the pen back but for me it wasn't the person who fouled him's fault it was the 3 players that got dragged towards Ayew & didn't make a tackle

You can't leave Zaha 1v1 against any defender he will always get the better of them - which shows you how well we dealt with him for the rest of the game!

He had his hands on zaha after getting turned, it was always going to be a peno. If McKenna is fit, would rather have him and boly.

Just watching Matthijs de Ligt get ripped a new one by the Championship's Ismaela Sarr. Amazing how similar his problems look to big Joe's at the start of the season.

It doesn't matter how good you are if you're dragged out of position constantly with no support from the wing back.
