Jonjo Shelvey

I’m not sure after signing 26 players changing how we play mid season to suit Jonjo Shelvey who has been able to stay fit for the past year and a half is the best idea personally. Especially when being out of possession and hitting teams on the counter has brought us relative success.

Yes I trust Cooper etc but just my opinion.
Who said anything about throwing out what we have done?

It's adding a different option & allowing us to approach moments in a match differently. You can't have every player exactly the same sort of player, he's completely different to what we have nor can you approach every match in the exact same way.

We clearly won't agree, so best to move on

Its about options mate, thats why we signed Wood. There going to be times when we need to change the way we play, especially on the road.

Not every player we sign needs to be a direct replacement for another.

A midfield 3 of Freuler/Danilo/Shelvey could mean we could add possession football to our options…
They're all midgets though (well, compared to a lot of players).

Shelvey 184
Danilo 177
Freuler 180

One thing with having say Yatesy in there is that he has height and strength advantages which these wouldn't necessarily have.

I always thought Shelvey was quite tall

5 foot 10" and 6 foot aren't considered small for midfielders.

Height isn't an issue.

Here’s how I see it (for what it’s worth - spoiler: very little)

The way we play we often have an issue with our forwards being isolated when we’re under pressure. Plenty of examples this season. This means when we get the ball back, the pass to our front players is high margin for error, requiring above average technique and vision.

Whatever you may think of him (i’m no fan of his personality from the evidence available) if you’ve watched this lad play, you can’t deny there’s a healthy portion of logic in signing him. Same with Wood.

Just hope he doesn’t affect the squad harmony, but I guess Coops won’t let that happen, he’ll chuck him in the Trent if need be,

They are on the small side of average and would probably look (as a unit) smaller than if we had one taller player in there compared with other teams.

Though having a taller outlet in Wood will probably help overall too.

Well if a toilet outlet in the Woods will help ....

Not sure when you watched him mate but he has never been a box to box midfielder in his time at Newcastle.

On the 1865 podcast they had a Newcastle beat writer on. Basically if you have runners around him and have games where we have more of the ball it is where he excels. Did his best work with Isaac Hayden next to him as he did all the dirty work.

I still think it is a horrible fit. Our midfield isn’t good enough to support that type of player and we always look better when hitting teams on the counter rather than having the ball.
I think with Shelveys passing range this can suit our counterattacking. He can ping a great ball and shows that on some of the clips.
