Although he never quite fulfilled his potential due to circumstances and, ultimately, injury, John was very highly regarded as a top prospect when he was a teenager, to such an extent that the then England manager, Don Revie, invited him to a full squad get-together in 1976.
When he realised that injury had got the better of him, sadly forcing his retirement, he moved back to his home town of Skegness, where, being the down-to-earth bloke that he was, he drove a laundry van for many years

I thought he lost his place to Shilts after the 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the Championship season (I particularly remember that game because I took my neighbour along to show him how good we were!), but it was the game after that. (v. Wolves)
Like so many others, shocked to hear he had succumbed to illness at such a young age. He gave the club good service and I remember him for that.
