I've flip-flopped and considered many views in my own mind on how to deal with everything that happens with Nottingham Forest FC.

You wonder why you put yourself through the torment year after year, and in order to protect yourself from the misery you become indifferent and focus on other areas of your life.

But ultimately you still love this club and put most of your mental energy in it, like your first and only love in life. You could choose someone else, but would it be the same?

You feel trapped with their shit and consider leaving, but something keeps drawing you back in. It's crazy, there's no rhyme or reason to it, but that's what we do as humans.

We fall for something, and the familiarity of their ways, longing for change, remembering the better days, has too much of an impact on us.

All it would take is Forest to win 5-6 games over a 10 game period and we’d all be back in spades. It’s the nature of football - you avoid it when the chips are down and go all in when the success comes along.

I try to stay level headed with it. It used to ruin my weekend when Forest lose, but I don’t allow that to happen anymore - as much as I don’t allow it to make my weekend when Forest win.

I find I enjoy the conversation and the activity around football almost as much, if not more, than the football itself. It’s why I do things like help out with Forza etc - the sense of community is why I love Forest, not because the team are any good. If that was a factor, I’d support a team in the top 6 of the prem.

My wife regularly chastises me for ‘not even watching it’ when the football is on, cos I’m as interested in the conversation on here as I am the game on the pitch. You all make that up (for better and for worse! Alf ) so you have my thanks for that.

The biggest negative has been being unable to go to the games. I miss my seat, the guys around me who chat even without knowing each other’s names, the lad I go with and the routine of it all. I really look forward to it - my weekends feel empty without it.

I'm 60 this year and can remember days of mat gillies (just) the crap years of Mackay and Alan brown when we were a lower 2nd division club but have also been honoured to have travelled to Europe 10 times and been at all our Wembley days and at cov when we won the league. The last 20 years have been f***ing grim tbh but this is a way of life most of us are born into. We don't piss off to chav direct buy a livrpool/ man utd or Chelsea shirt sit in a local pub on a Sunday tea and pretend to be their biggest fan.for me it's not just about our bag of shit team it's about our community, our mates ( some who are sadly no longer with us) our home. Fro me it's like a family and you cant turn your back on family when it gets tough.o

Its painful watching and hearing my son get disillusioned by the club too. Young and once enthusiastic now dragged down to a level I was at back in the past under Megson and co. I suppose I care less now than I did but he shouldn't be so pessimistic so soon in his Forest life.

My son is the same. And I feel like a twat for thinking less of him for not wanting to watch the games any more, when in fact he's the one with the right attitude in preferring to watch something else.

The overwhelming majority of football clubs have significantly more 'down' periods than 'up', which obviously results in more periods of frustration than not for fans of most clubs.

That's essentially what we've signed-up to a lifetime of I'm afraid. It's already bled into your soul and there's simply nothing you can do about that.

The only solution is by trying to reduce the amount of despair caused by finding a way to compartmentalise it all. Good luck with that.

Agreed Oats me owd cherub.

We are elevated above most of the chaff because of the Clough years and are still a biggish club with great support in many eyes.

We are still by far the worst cup side in the entire football league, which doesn't help.

......and despite our trophy-haul not indicating that to be the case Ray.

I think the points above are valid, but there's also a slightly bigger disconnect there because of.....

*the lack of fan interaction from the club's top brass in recent years;
*the fact that most fans wanted to see the new owners take the opposite approach to Fawaz, and build properly giving managers time;
*DT's issues with the club;
*Covid;
*the sale of academy players to fund a plethora of signings which are dropped and/or moved out within a short space of time;

Much like a bad album from your fave band, it's a lot easier to accept the downs if the the core of what resonates with you is still there. But I think in recent years a lot of that has been shunned tbh, and it's all felt a bit 90's Metallica. No umph or guitar solos, and suddenly you're questioning what the band are really all about.

Just my opinion though. Might be miles out on that, and just writing bollocks to try and talk about Metallica.
