This was in the Mirror a couple of weeks back. They made an interesting point that Sunderland's squad cost 81 times the amount that Burton paid.

Frightening isn't it and proof that FFP in its present format is unworkable.

These figures are for transfer fees only, not salaries and additional payments.

Still shows that with a good manager, the right work ethic and a fair slice of luck that money isn't the be all and end all.

Derby are going to be in a real financial pickle by the look of that, if they don’t go up.

Villa top and that doesn’t even include John Terry... he’s probably ahead of the bottom 4 on his own.

Wasn't Assombalonga our record signing?

A quick bit of mental arithmetic suggest that cohen, bridcutt, lichaj, jolley, Murphy, bouchelakis, Velios must come to more than £7m

Bet no other club has raked in the transfer fees which we have for the likes of Burke, Antonio & Britt either.

Really need to see some serious investment next year if the powers that be who weren't happy with a steady build want us to compete.

plus Mancienne £1m, Hobbs ~£1m

I agree £7m seems an underestimate.

Mancienne was £500k, Hobbs undisclosed. Cohen was £250k (we paid more for Davies to allow Yeovil to avoid the Cohen sell on), Bridcutt £500k, Lichaj £0, Murphy £2m, Bouch £0, Vellios £500k and Lolley undisclosed.

That's sub £3.75m if you discount the undisclosed which are being treated as £0 by looks of it. Add McKay and Clough for £500k and £2.5m and you get to £7m.

Anyway, regardless of that, it reinforces the idea that mid-table was a good target for us this year given both competition against more financially liquid competition and a previous relegation battle the season before, and everyone saying this was a top six squad potentially and that we should be doing better was completely and utterly wrong as most sane people knew all along.

Mancienne was £1m according to his wikipedia page, Hobbs was 'close to £1m' according to Sky Sports...

Anyway, the important figure is wage bill not transfer fees. Wage bill correlates strongly with final league position. As someone mentioned above John Terry was signed on a free but is likely to be one of the highest wage earners. There would have been zero chance of him signing for a non-parachute team because they wouldn't be able to afford him.

Mancienne was actually signed as an undisclosed having done a quick google, as was Hobbs. Whilst there's no doubt the squad is worth more than the £7m quoted, every other club will be in a similar boat with a number of undisclosed deals not counting towards their figures.

What isn't of any doubt is that the current squad is one of the cheapest assembled squad in terms of transfer fees in the league. That's no surprised when half the squad is from the academy and the most expensive player is either Zach Clough at £3m or Joe Lolley undisclosed. Lots of other teams have paid £5m+ for more than one player. We've not done it at all.

I'll trawl through the accounts again next time they're available but the recent road of travel has been trimming of operating cost and no large CAPEX. Subject to change this summer..

Well Darikwa (£2m), Murphy (£2m), Clough (£2.5m), McKay (£500k) make £7m alone.

We are about where we should be in the league really.

Yes, we couldn’t sign anyone for a fee for a couple of years and then there was minimal outlay until last summer, when even the £5m wasn’t that much. As I said it doesn’t really tell the whole story though as I’m guessing our wage bill is still in the top half, until the high wage non contributors go next month and before the new players sign in July.

According to Tails, Lolley signed for a nominal fee, so hopefully ZC is the last of the long list of terrible value for money players in recent years.

It doesn't matter how much the squad cost. What's important are the names on Dougie's list. I'm going to wait for that before I make any judgments.

I have it in my head Lolley was about £4.5m?
