It was all a reality check for wolves regarding our previous offer - they got a good deal, we got a good player, who will hopefully become a great one.

We probably just had preliminary discussions with the player and club about his availability in case we didn't get MGW, then some media outlets in France got carried away and took it as a deal being close. Telling that the likes of Romano, Percy, Unwin, Ornstein, etc said absolutely bugger all about him.

Well, I don't see how that matters either but premier league clubs were reportedly after:
Awoniyi
Williams
O'Brien
Mangala
Lingard
Niakhaté (not certain on that one)

I'm surprised we didn't have competition for Freuler.

Feels like a bit of a backtrack from the French media to be honest. No one credible said it was happening, and it's funny how all this comes out after we make a breakthrough with the MGW deal.

Niakhate was linked to West Ham so you're right with him.

I really do not get how we supposedly sign MGW, who I can't fathom the furor around over this fella.
Mind boggling
Think we were never going to sign this guy, it was just smoke and mirrors to secure our primary target. Mind unboggled?

Niakhate was deffo linked with West Ham, Leipzig were interested in Awoniyi, there were (I believe) at least three other clubs in for Mangala, and Omar Richards (RIP) also had suitors too.

So it isn‘t like Forest were looking at the last Turkey in the shop here; these were quality players, who had other clubs interested in them.

MGW is in competition with Lingard I think, probably the long term option when the latter leaves at the end of the season. But this lad is different again, having a change option would help as teams gets used to us.
Also signing both helps with a change of formation to a back 4 if we have to during a game. So I have a little hope we still grab him.

I do wonder how close it was to happening because there was never really anything from the usual journalists on this guy.
Fabrizio Romano didn't tweet, neither did Percy.

I do think looking at Aouar and Gibbs-White, Aouar is the better player in his position but Gibbs-White is more adaptable to playing in different positions and obviously, Steve Cooper really wanted him. If Gibbs-White wasn't English and didn't play for a rival in the Premierleague, he's probably going for something closer to what Lyon want for Aouar.

That said though, it's pretty damning that no other club until maybe now with Palace being interested, because at 15m Euros, you'd think he'd be well sort after. Some of the comments gave me like Taarabt/Payet vibes where you know he's an absolute don but he's trouble.

He isn't in their squad for tomorrow, would suggest he's still leaving. I wonder if he will end up at Palace, it'll be interesting to see how he gets on in the Prem and whether we should've pushed for him...

It wasn't difficult to grasp, you were clearly looking for a negative where there isn't one

Pretty sure we've been shopping in the same market as West Ham, Fulham & Everton ect
That we haven't really had to compete against other established clubs to sign players, that we know of. Didn't realise it was so difficult to grasp.
So just from memory remembering the host of players where there was a tweet or post alleging we and Club x were interested in you can consider

Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and to some extent Spurs and Newcastle are fishing in other more expensive pools to us but of course Spurs went for Spence.

Leeds were interested in several players we were supposedly looked at including O'Brein and that US Striker and then looked elsewhere, Bournemouth have looked at less expensive players but we both looked at Rothwell and Tavernier but we decided to go for significant upgrades on both, CP are late to the market, Everton and West Ham have been all over our targets and we beat Everton to Dennis, West ham wanted Lingard and Niakhate but both chose us. Southampton linked to a few alongside us but haven't splashed much cash apart from Aribo who were interested in. Aston Villa don't have much to spend after getting Firmino in last season by the looks of it so not in the market to compete. Us and Brentford liked Lewis-Potter and of course they inquired about our current players. Brighton signed Estupinan and Enciso who we'd been linked with, not sure if we had any real interest in Colwill but he's gone there. Fulham we were up against for Neco and he came to us. Wolves we shared some apparent interest in Vinagre. you can ignore Leicester as they aren't buying anyone. Awonyii was courted by other clubs - undisclosed PL interest there and Henderson had interest from Newcastle but chose us

So if you for some reason you want to somehow rate our players by whether or another club were or weren't interested in them the answer is yes we have and we've won some, lost some. And every club apart from Fulham and to a lesser extent Bournemouth are by definition "established" clubs as they been in the PL a damn sight longer than we have.

Sounds like Lyon are trying to drive the price up, even with a year left on his contract, because they know how much of a good player he is.

From what I've read, we offered a fee. They rejected and said here's our asking price. We matched it. Lyon then said the asking price had 'evolved'.
