Hi all,

I’m a psychology bachelor’s student currently writing my thesis on English football culture. To collect data on this topic, I made a survey to measure experiences with England fans at the 2020 UEFA European Championship Final between England and Italy at Wembley. If you attended the match, I would really appreciate it if you filled out the survey linked below. The survey is completely anonymous and confidential and only takes around 5 minutes of your time. This would be a massive help to me in completing my thesis and graduating!

Here’s the link to the survey: https://uva.fra1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2sDmHBXR1QGhpzg

Thank you for your time! :)

Good luck with your degree.

I wasn't at the game so I can't help with your survey. I am currently doing a psychology course which sits somewhere between GCSE and A Level and would love to see your questions.

I don't want to mess up your survey by wandering through it putting in random answers. Is there a way I can take a look at them?

Oh, I'm doing the course out of interest, I'm not planning on doing anything beyond the course so I won't be stealing it to use at some future date.

I wasn't at the final but I do go to a lot of England matches (including the semi final) so had a look at this out of curiosity. As far as these kinds of surveys go it really is in my opinion a load of crap. It asks amongst other things, on a scale of strongly agree to strongly disagree, do you believe that:
  • Sometimes England fans felt like a powder keg ready to explode.
  • England fans disagreed with others.
  • England fans felt deprived when they thought about what they had compared to other football fans.
  • When England fans felt frustrated, they let their irritation show.
  • England fans were quick to anger but got over it quickly.
  • England fans were so mad they broke things.
  • Getting into arguments with others that disagreed with England fans was unavoidable.
  • At times, England fans felt that they were treated unfairly.
  • England fans had trouble controlling their temper.
  • England fans could think of no good reason to hit a person.
  • England fans were somewhat argumentative.
  • Other people always seemed to catch breaks and not England fans.
  • England fans identified with their fanbase.
  • England fans were suspicious of overly friendly strangers at the match.
  • When people annoyed England fans, they told them what they thought of them.
  • England fans openly told their friends when they disagreed with them.
  • England fans got into fights a little more often than the average Euro 2020 final attendee,
  • England fans were confident in their ability to solve problems that they might have faced at the match.
  • England fans were eaten up with jealousy.
  • England fans felt that people were laughing at them behind their backs.
  • England fans were even tempered people..
  • England fans couldn't control the urge to strike another person.
  • England fans threatened people they knew
The trouble at the Euro final was coke heads trying to break into the ground. The person who came up with these questions clearly thinks the scenes they saw on the news were England fans fighting with others. If they're doing a study of English football culture they could do worse that actually going to a few matches.

Thanks.

Most of those example questions seem subjective and very generalised and all bar one question doesn't have any reference to the behaviour of the opposition fans. You could give high scores to the questions but ignore the fact that the opposition fans were even worse.

Who knows how much fighting the average 2020 attendee got into. Who would know that? Every little fracas isn't reported and wouldn't be known by the respondee. The person answering the question would likely be making a guess at the answer.

Yes drugs and alcohol do appear to be big factors in football fan trouble. Drink was a big part of the build up to games in the 70's and 80's when there was lots of crowd trouble .

Remove them then.

Or ban me.

You mean you don't like them? All of my posts are unintelligible to you?

I respect the fact that this is a free to join and, indeed, public forum. I like to engage and interact with the posters of my choosing and that doesn't include the negative, downcast, types that tend to rule the roost here. Omar, for example (and whilst he isn't a mod and I'm sure he is a wonderful person, man, father, husband, son, brother, uncle, friend and colleague, whatever . . . . he is the absolute pits as a Forest "supporter". A complete stinker).

Again, please remove my posts that you, as a moderator, don't feel are appropriate. I completely respect your right to do so or ban me. I'd rather you did that than passively aggressively quote my posts in some sort of finger wagging exercise.

I could not understand the posts I quoted.

I have no intention of removing your posts, or banning you but kindly request that you use a language that can be understood by everyone.

Sorry. That questionnaire is clearly designed to paint England fans in a negative light.

Whilst I've never been the biggest supporter of some of their historical behaviour, England fans have improved a lot over the last 20 odd years. I have been to games and there's a lot of families who sit there and chat quietly and cheer and sing with respect.

The Italian fans in the final weren't whiter than white. Both countries have their good and bad points and same goes for their football fans.

This self loathing for brownie points amongst other countries must stop. People are just laughing at England right now.

And so, from now, I'll only speak in the language that is understood here; the universal language of the LTLF Forum.

A language of dejection, negativity, doom and gloom: 'Omarish'.

A language of constantly being offended, upset, persecuted and ridiculed.

A language that Skippy The Morpeth Kangaroo doesn't feel the need to pass by on.
