Greeks bearing FFP gifts...

So if we did indeed sell Vellios say to Olympiakos does that mean we could do some FFP tinkering?

We 'sell' him for some fanciful fee like £10m which goes towards our FFP calculations, but at the end of the day it's not real money as as we have the same owners. Paying themselves is just shuffling figures around on a spreadsheet/tax return. The upshot though is that we suddenly have a lot more wriggle room when it comes to other signings where FFP is concerned as our balance sheet says we're £10m better off.

That's assuming the Greek leagues don't have the same ridiculous rules that we have over here of course.

How did it work for Watford when they were in this league? Although I think they may have gone up before the system came in.

We've been through this before. It cannot happen, we have ffp rules as well. It is perfectly conceivable that we buy Vellios for, say, 2m, so that there's a profit for Forest, but numbers (even nominal) in the order of 10m are out of the question.

The Greek leagues don't (as far as I'm aware) but UEFA do. Anything that increases our wriggle room will decrease Olympiacos'. It's a non starter.

Watford loaned a lot of players. Our Greek older brothers don't really spend more than a few million on their players, so, it'd look a bit dodge.

Would suspect both clubs will be run completely independently with the odd loan from them to us if it helps, but certainly not to Watford's abuse of it.

Well hopefully our new owners can do whatever it is that every other club in the league seemingly does to ensure we can spend what we like without ever having to worry about FFP.

Unfortunately our new owners can't give us parachute payments.

Actually - what most clubs do is offer sensible wages, to players that they've thoroughly scouted to esnure there isn't too much risk attached. Whilst maximising all available revenue streams, and selling star players to cover any shortfall.
The only clubs splashing stupid money are those that have parachute payments that dwarf most countries national debt.

I'd rather do this slowly but in the right way. Long term thinking will bring success, not short term gambles and strategic rule-breaking.

I don't want an asterisk against any possible success we may have like Watford did with their promotion. Let's do things the right way. We've had enough years of doing things anything but the right way!

In theory I agree, but these rules are there for one single purpose only - to f*** clubs like us in the arse, and keep the Prem "elite" in the Prem.

I don't want us to be underhand or gamble stupidly. But I also wouldn't be against a timely breaking of the rules if we were in a position to benefit from it like a few other clubs have.

It's be nice to think we could get to the top honourable & nobley, but even Clough dealt with a few bungs & this industry favours the sharks.

EM (sp?) has just bought some media company in Greece. Perhaps he can get us on TV over there & a slice of TV money to help?

If people even want to consider this sort of thing they need to be cheering Olympiacos on in their Champions League qualifiers. The difference between them being in and out of it is massive.

That would be fun, but if you're talking about the Championship (which means that you would get 1/24 of the money), the Greek market is so tiny that your profit would probably be in the fish and chips category.

I agree with your point but it's still ironic that we have to worry about what UEFA think of us maybe doing it for sporting reasons whilst Abramovic has done it a few times over the years, presumably as some kind of tax fiddle, and no one seems to give 2 f*cks about it. No surprise there though.

Doing that sort of thing only pays off if, like QPR, Leicester, Bournemouth, Watford and Brighton you get promoted.

Derby are still here though....

Another consideration would be the tax. Surely no such deal would cost the owners nothing? Don't know for a fact but I really can't see the British tax man not taking a chunk of football transfer money? After all it's tax deductible revinue, no?
