Tweeted this last night; :tophat:

@frankieboyle: 10.49 every night I play a really good song about Nigel Clough

PS Leave off the NLN hate please. This song is about the legendary Forest centre forward of the late 80s and early 90s, not the current D*rby manager.

I've seen that performed live. Great stuff.

Is it about NLN or Robbo?

From the magazine 4-4-2:

Give Him A Ball And A Yard Of Grass – Sultans Of Ping FC
The Sultans scored a minor hit with knock-kneed indie anthem Where’s Me Jumper? but the Forest fans also penned this passionate ode to then-player Nigel Clough. “Give him a ball and a yard of space/ He’ll give you a move with godly grace/ He’s a nice young man with a lovely smile.” You can't deny that, even if he does end up managing your rivals.

Clearly about NLN when you consider his Dad has been quoted for the final line above.

Great band live btw.

Was a great player for us, no matter what anyone says. Was also touted as a future Forest manager each year he was at Burton. Was a popular choice too, until he joined Direby and turned a bit weird.

It's a shame that the young 'uns never saw him play for us and don't realise just how good he was.

"Give him the ball and a yard of grass..."

What a player he was.

tell you what Rich, he was lazy but made up for up it, his passing was impeccable and although a bit lightweight, had huge presence on the pitch

Saddens me to see how management has made him appear a bit nasty, weird and I'd say a bitter man. Fantastic footballer

Id say this about sums him up......I will add that when i saw him parading around the technical area on Saturday trying to bully the ref into making the decision their way i couldnt help thinking that his dad would be ashamed of the way he comes across like that. His dad wouldnt have took that from any of his players so i doubt he would have liked his son to do it. Disgraceful.

Could take a decent free kick as well..... i remember him scoring a quality one away at West ham when we drew 3-3. if i remember rightly Pearce used to take them one side and Clough the other

Does seem to quote part of Brian Clough's comment about Robertson (and I thought it was about him but if the band say it's about Nigel Clough it must be and the lovely smile line wouldn't really fit with Robertson would it?):

From Wikipedia - John Robertson page (also mentions FourFourTwo magazine put him in thier top 100 players ever):
Brian Clough, Robertson's manager at Nottingham Forest, was quoted as saying "John Robertson was a very unattractive young man. If one day, I felt a bit off colour, I would sit next to him. I was bloody Errol Flynn in comparison. But give him a ball and a yard of grass, and he was an artist, the Picasso of our game." [1] In his autobiography Clough noted that "Rarely could there have been a more unlikely looking professional athlete... [He was a] scruffy, unfit, uninterested waste of time...but something told me he was worth persevering with." but that "[He] became one of the finest deliverers of a football I have ever seen - in Britain or anywhere else in the world - as fine as the Brazilians or the supremely gifted Italians.

It's probably just a football cliche. They probably said it about Stanley Matthews.
