Forest Early History - sponsored by I‘m Red Till Dead

That was the quarter final of the FA Cup. Forest won 2-1.

It was the second of three rounds of the cup that Forest played at the Kennington Oval that season.

Jan 28th v the Old Harrovians 2-0 to Forest.
Feb 25th v Oxford Uni (QF) 2-1 to Forest.
Mar 22nd v the Old Etonians (SF) 2-1 to the Old Etonians.
That was an interesting year for the FA Cup because, as the Official History of the FA Cup notes, "For the first time, northern clubs began to make their presence felt and, among them, Nottingham Forest reached the semi-final". Another northern club mentioned (I suppose Forest are considered northern by London centric reporters) is Darwin, who reached the fourth round to play against the eventual winners, Old Etonians, but lost in three games and were so hard up they had to rely on subscriptions raised in the town to travel to the games at the Oval; £175 to which the FA contributed £10 and Old Etonians £5. I can't see that happening these days!

I think in the earliest days of the FA Cup the early rounds were regionalised. Forest's first two opponents that season were their old adversaries Notts (3-1 to Forest away) and Sheffield FC (2-0 to Forest at home).

I don't know if this is of interest to anyone, but Max Media Publishing have put out a 2023 wall calendar with pictures of people from across Forest's past; one per month.

The images are from the Charles Buchan's Collection. There are pictures of the following:

Frank Forman, Grenville Morris, Enoch West, Sam Hardy, Wally Ardron, Tommy Graham, Jack Burkitt, Joe Baker, Ian Moore, John Robertson, Stan Collymore and Brian Clough.

The full size of the Calendar is 43 x 33cm. The pictures are just shy of A4 (approx 7.5mm less wide and 20mm less long). There is space to make a note against each day of the month.

If anyone is interested take a look here. They sell at £11.99.

If my tablet charges I'll take a picture of the January page so you can see the layout. It won't be till much later in the day though.

Ok not the greatest picture but you'll get the idea from it.

Thanks very much. After several years of giving me a calendar with specially selected family photos, the girls changed tactics this year. Result; because I didn't buy a calendar whilst expecting theirs to arrive, I didn't have a calendar for this year, so I ordered this one. It will do me nicely. Thanks again.

Added a picture of the January page to the post above so you get a better idea of the layout.

Sorry about the quality of the picture but I have had a mare getting anything. Anyway there's enough to get an idea of the page layout

Following on from some postings (shown below) on the Dane Murphy thread about the 1997 takeover and alternatives to the Nigel Wray bid)

Anderson was talking of possibly trying to bring in Jurgen Klinsmann and Jordan Letchkov if they got the nod for the takeover.

Fawazesque.

£13m to rescue the Reds

Sandy’s pledge to fund Forest relegation fight

MILLIONAIRE Sandy Anderson Sandy Anderson leader of the locally-based consortium chosen to take over Nottingham Forest today promised there is £13m ready to help save the club from relegation.

Mr Anderson and three colleagues have been nominated by the club’s board of directors as their preferred bidders beating the rival bid from Monte Carlo-based millionaire Lawrie Lewis and Nottingham-born author Phil Soar.

The four-man group of leading local businessmen must now wait until shortly before Christmas when their proposals will be officially put to the club’s 209 shareholders at an Extraordinary General Meeting where they will need a 70 majority to take control.

The meeting is expected to take place on or before December 23 and Mr Anderson said: “The money is in place and Forest could have it tomorrow. Now it’s just a case of persuading the shareholders that we are the right people to take the club forward.”

There are no immediate financial incentives being offered to the shareholders, but Mr Anderson hopes that will not prove a stumbling block and stressed that providing the finances to enhance the team’s chances of avoiding relegation was most important.

“Getting Forest out of the mess they’re in is more important,” he said. “Right now we’re in the situation where we have to make the right decision on signing the right players. That is our main priority.”

Scottish-born Anderson, 41 is joined by Newark-born merchant banker Nigel Doughty, Charlie Scott from London-based advertising giant Cordiant and shareholder Tim Farr, whose family were owners of Home Brewery.

His decision to enter the race came as a result of Forest’s advert placed in the Financial Times inviting bidders and Mr Doughty put him in touch with other interested parties. He feels that wealth of business experience unity and genuine feel for the club makes them the perfect candidates.

“We’re all supporters. We want to do something to help. We have some of the best business acumen and yet we all live local, with a strong sense of allegiance to Nottingham Forest,” he said.

Mr Anderson left the door open for further investors to join the four-man group and said he would welcome a call from the group Madness who have expressed an interest in pumping in some money.

“We’re going to go away now and put in more hard work attracting more people into the consortium and use our contacts in the city,” he added .

Unfortunately Madness had just finished the Two tone tour earlier in the month and had gone to the States on a solo tour so would have missed his his request for them to call him.

It certainly sounds like Madness-shortly before our head scout Ian Storey-Moore was out looking for talent
at top European Cup games!

I can't be bothered raising a new thread for this but Stuart Pearce's history is part of our history even if it happened before he came to the City Ground. I just came across his tale of Yak Jensen when I was doing a search. I must admit I hadn't heard the story before althogh TalkSport covert it too in 2018.

I'm sure this has been on the thread before, but the first game for a rebuilt Main Stand after the fire

I remember going to this game with my Dad.
It was strange seeing the Main Stand closed as it was still being rebuilt after the fire-I suppose we
might have to (cough) get used to that again soon.
I can’t quite recall when it was officially reopened-sometime in 1969,I think.

Did they order teams on the same points by goals scored rather than goal difference that season? Birmingham missed out on the playoffs to Sheffield United despite having a better goal difference and goal average. Sheffield United had scored 9 more goals.

Some club called Manchester City going down to the third tier.

Wonder what ever happened to them?

I must admit that I don't remember goals scored being the first of the sorting factors. I was pretty sure that goal difference came in in the 1970's to replace goal average as the primary sort on the positioning of teams on equal points. Looking up goal difference in wikipedia it says that the EFL used goals scored as the primary decider for positions of teams on the same point between 1992 and 1999, reverting to goal difference at the start of the 1999-2000 season. The 1990's was my equivalent of the 1960's 'If I remembered it it probably didn't happen' I was so busy.

Kjetil Osvold's Cat has done some research on season player ratings for the seasons 1976/7 to 1993/4 that appeared in the People Sunday newspapers. Included in the details are then current Forest players, plus a number who had played for us or would in later seasons. Only players mentionedi n the reports are included (except John McGovern who had been in listings close to the 1977/8 season end but not in the final table - possibly affected by some injuries he had near the end of the season. I added John to note his 3rd place standing in that years Football Writers Awards ).

Rankings relate to the division they play in and only a top 20 ranking figure is shown.

The figures for 1981/2 represent the latest fornd for that season. The final standings couldn't be found.

The figures for 1993/4 are from mid season as they were the last he could find for that season.

I reorganised it into a table which hopefully makes it easier to pick out information. Hopefully I have copied ihis data accurately.

Because of the length of the table it will stretch over two posts.
