The fixture list can usually be predicted with a reasonable amount of accuracy, can't it?

Wasn't there someone on here who used to work for the company that did the fixtures?

That would be me, albeit it's a while ago since I knew the guy who did it and so the process may have matured a bit since then.

One thing most people don't know is the fixture list is re-used as much as possible to reduce complexity and therefore there's a reason we always played Derby at home in October or November, because it worked. Similarly in 18/19 season we played West Brom and Birmingham as two of our first three home games. In 19/20 our first two home games were against West Brom and Birmingham.

The most likely starting fixture for us assuming nothing has changed since in the algorithmic calculation is unsurprisingly therefore Newcastle away.

The second most likely fixture in my opinion is Brentford away. This may seem surprising but it's because Leicester played Brentford away in their first game of the season and so it's quite easy to switch in another East Midlands team instead of them. It's still an away fixture so allows Forest to maintain the away/home rotation as we had this season just gone, so doesn't impact on any other fixtures of ours, and also allows Burnley to travel to Newcastle which suits the easier-travel-must-be-on-a-Saturday criteria. It fulfils a lot of the criteria without adding additional complexity by having to change other fixtures. And the reason it's Burnley not the others is because Luton will replace Southampton as a southern team and Sheff Utd will replace Leeds as a Yorkshire team.

Third most likely fixture is West Ham at home.

Cheers Maxi.

This falls into my "it shouldn't be interesting but somehow it is" category.

The fixture planning process has come under greater scrutiny in recent years, partly because of the increased number of televised games throughout the professional game. Clubs can make requests (especially to avoid clashes with other major events locally). Also there is supporter representation (FSA) on the fixtures Group which now includes PL, EFL, & NL input - hopefully this will avoid any repetition of any Forest and County home clashes planned on the same Saturday.
Once the proposed draft of fixtures has been prepared it is sent to clubs for review which may mean limited changes. This is probably where we are currently are given the late end to the 2022/23 season.
Of course, broadcasters will then select their picks on a monthly basis, hopefully they will adhere to the agreed lead-in times this season.

Regrettably there is no support for avoiding long midweek journeys - in the PL there are only three planned midweek fixtures. Last season two of our midweek fixtures were Brighton home and away.

Not quite.

Clubs have been able to make requests based on whatever reason they want, they don't need to give a reason for it (although doing so may help their case). Requests to avoid home matches when other major local events are on are lodged by the police usually rather than the club and such requests have long been a feature of the fixture list. How many times have Forest and County played at home on the same Saturday? Once in the last two decades?

The draft list of fixtures isn't sent to the clubs for review. either It may get sent to them for commentary, but the clubs have no say on appropriateness of the fixtures (because they've already had their say - their requests come before the fixtures are complete - and the fixture list that is a compromise of each clubs individual requests).

From a Forest POV, I think our only specific request as a club is that we play a home match on 1st Jan (which automatically means we play away on Boxing Day).

Don't think that's true - pretty sure Forest have had to change 1 home game every season since god knows when for County - weird how it pisses off 30k Forest fans instead of 2k County fans for the inconvenience.

Right, balls on the line to make an educated guess at our opening first few fixtures based on a knowledge of how the algorithm works (or at least, used to work some time ago) and how confident I feel in each one.

Opening fixture: Brentford - away - confidence level: c.30%
Second fixture: West Ham - home - confidence level: 20%
Third fixture: Liverpool - away - confidence level: c.10%
Fourth fixture: Luton or Bournemouth - home - confidence level: c.25%
Fifth: Manchester City - away - confidence level: c.25%
Sixth: No idea here. Best guess is Fulham at home but no confidence.
Seventh: Sheffield United - Away: confidence level: c.15%
Eight: Spurs - home - confidence level c.10%
Nine: Luton or Brighton - away - confidence level c.15%

The complexity of the algorithm means that the chances of guessing the fixtures even if you know how it works is next to zero, because small changes for one team ripple through and can up changing tens of fixtures elsewhere.

Looking forward to none of these being correct tomorrow.

I'd take a couple of winnable home games and getting City away done in the first five games.

Brentford at home would be a decent start.

But I’ll say we get Sheff Utd.

Brighton,Wolves, West Ham and Liverpool in some order very soon after.

Weren't we away 1st and last games last season? Would be a bit unfair to start us on the road again.

Impact of the World Cup over winter.

I think Forest actually ask to start away from home (at a guess, it's because it gets a "trickier" fixture out of the way when the squad is still gelling, because for god knows how long we've always had massive overhauls each summer).

We should be at home final day this season in my opinion.

Wolves away from the leak I've seen.

Is a reasonably high possibility if Wolves had requested to start at home first and that is granted. Recent seasons they've started away from home though. If we end up with Wolves away then it means Sheff United take most likely to travel to Newcastle or Brentford.
