I'm not sure what it is about Sven. Maybe it's because he was the first foreign manager to manage England.
Maybe it's the way the media treated him and how he handled himself and spoke with respect in public. Never showing emotion. Stoic.
Maybe it was all his previous achievements at club level that wanted me to defend him.
Then that 5-1 night in Germany. It's one of those 'Remember where you were' moments.
He might have made mistakes in his life, like the rest of us, but underneath it all I've always felt he was a genuinely decent man. I really wish he was in charge now.

At the end of the day if Sven had Southgates draws I’d be confident he would have got to semi finals and finals. People really do forget about the luck Southgate has had. Southgate and Sven are basically the same. Got us to a point than lose to the big heads. Except Sven got a lot more flack which is why I like him more. I can’t stand the Southgate cronyism of the media.

Scored a tap in when he was first to a rebound from a Vinicius shot. Largely because he was in an offside position when the ball was passed to Vinicius. But apparently that isn’t seeking to gain an advantage because the offside rule has been butchered.
He also had another chance but hit it straight at the keeper.
Poor game. Brazil’s special move seems to be getting away with the tactical foul. England’s special move seems to be blazing the ball over the bar. Chilwell made Nuno Tavares look deadly accurate with his shooting and delivery.

I get incensed when a team decide to target a really good opposition player, as Brazil did on Bellingham. Then making sure (apart from Paqueta) that the fouls are spread out equally amongst the team. I reckon after the first player is booked for a succession of fouls on the same player, another deliberate foul, by any other player on that same opposition player should warrant a card, too. It was just too calculated.
England just looked like a team meeting together for the first time, which of course they were. But still the Brazilians had quicker feet and better passing ability( the pass and move was so superior to England). And, like our Murillo, centre backs with footballing ability, as a contrast to our cart horse centre backs.

I only saw the first 35 minutes but both sides looked bright attacking wise with some great technical ability. England looked to miss the focal point of Kane.
And the ref was shit, let Brazil get away with cynical fouling every time a man in white got hold of the ball in a good position. Not really surprised to see he only booked one of them. Bruno should have received a yellow four minutes in for hacking Gallagher down from behind.

I agree he is/was a genuinely decent man but I don't wish he was in charge now, we'd have Beckham come out of retirement to captain from the "quarterback" position again.
I actually see a lot of Sven in Southgate.

Going 1 up against Brazil and then trying to defend the lead, that was the blueprint for Southgate-ball. We had a chance of winning in 2002 and the negative approach put paid to it.

I vote for a rule that says if you withdraw from England duty you miss your next club match (or 2 if both international games).
I'd also like to see independent medical taking a look too. If there's nothing wrong with you, well.... If you don't want to play for your country then don't - and you won't get picked again.
