Does anyone remember sheep shagging Derby County? (STILL the worst team in history!)

Watched most of it. They deserved to go up as they were comfortably the second best side in the league after Pompey but by Christ it's a poor league.

There's plenty of rubbish at the bottom of the Championship this season so I suspect they'll probably stay up next season with some proper investment but Max Bird is going to be a big loss.

God I hope we don't have to play them next season.
It's certainly a poor league - I went to watch Pompey vs Shrewsbury a few weeks back, both teams were poor although the second half improved somewhat.

Pompey will have to strengthen significantly just to survive in the Championship, the Sheep even more so.

Still think there's a big gap between league one and the championship, their current side will get battered if they go up and they don't have much cash to spend.

Wage bill of around £8m a year. Obviously no transfer fees but a squad with an average age of 28 as well.

Leicester are in a similar boat with a big wage bill, quite a few players out of contract and can't spend much.

Both need to find quality at budget prices. The gulfs between leagues seem to be getting bigger.

I posted this on the matchday thread but probably more appropriate here. I had a look at the forum of our furry friends next door and one of their posters says

"Congratulations to Forest. The worst ever team to stay up."

Well I thought, rather that than be the worst team to ever go down.....

The worst team ever to stay up but still 200% better than the worst team to go down.

I mean the thing is its referenced EVERY single season as well, I thought it was largely us that kept it alive but its not, every team that struggles essentially says "Yep we were bad, but we weren't Derby County bad".

The chompers will struggle next season, taking the micky because we lost today, but against a team that has spent £1billion. Looking forward to next season when they whinge about the mighty Luton and their parachute payments making the championship unequal as Warne takes them straight back down and earns his statue/freedom of the city.

The whole "worst thing to stay up" thing is really misleading, IMO.

17th is 17th, no matter how many points it takes to get it.

I've never heard anyone ever suggest that there's a "worst ever team to win the title" when it used to only take 78 points?

Worst team to ever stay up in the premier league? Would have snapped your hand off for that a few years ago.
I get why you say that but we are all forgetting the fundamentals here.

The quality of the 2008 league was 1000x higher than todays offering.

Never forget that 2008 Kenny Miller would have won this seasons golden boot.and Balon D'Or after netting his 60th goal of the season.

"Worst team to stay up"?

Yeah but that's with the asterisk; if you add on the deducted points and we get a point against Burnley, then we match West Brom's 34 points, and if we win that's 36 points which is better than multiple teams who finished on 35 so, 🖕

I honestly couldn't give a shit if we're the worst team to stay up. The ONLY thing that matters is staying up.

Nobody should forget where we've come from and what weve been though... 23 years outside EPL, risen from bottom of league in October... promoted via play offs as late as June... very few contracted players so signed 30+ players in one season... forced to sell our biggest attacking threat... emotional upset of Cooper's departure... PSR points deduction... string of terrible decisions from officials.

After all that, we've (almost certainly) survived for a third season. I suspect we have at least two more seasons of struggling to survive (despite what EM might think) and survival continues to be a great achievement. One we should be proud of, despite the media portraying us as lucky and as the bad guys in the plucky Luton story

Every season we stay up strengthens our position, our finances and our PSR situation. Despite predictions that the teams coming up will make next year's EPL much stronger, I'm not convinced. Any team coming up will struggle but I fancy our chances more each season.
