I'm a bit gutted with this news. Rooney would have cost them more than the average at that level and still been out of his depth.

He’s done them a massive favour tbh. He’s expensive, unproven and working in League One under an embargo would have been a clusterfuck.

Yes, but by "pushed" I meant I wonder if the prospective new owners had laid out their budgets for him, and he had indeed decided to jump now before it becomes obvious that he wouldn't be happy, and he may have also realised that he would be totally out of his depth, with no players and inexperience owners he doesn't really know and strategically it would be better for him to leave now and be a hero, rather than show that he would inevitably struggle in L2.

Whilst it's a shame that we don't get to see him drag them down to L2, a lot of their fans invested wholeheartedly in the myth that 1) he was amazing; 2) he was totally committed to them.
