Do you think a female goalie could get a place in the English League team?

It's a tricky subject, firstly I'm very sceptical she is good enough for the professional men's game. The standard of women's football is very poor. Put this into perspective the soceroos women's team who are something like 5th best in the world lost 8 mill to under 15s a league side.

The only problem I see with it though is if she can play in the men's game why can't poor standard men players play in the women's game? In fact the only answer you conclude is that everything would have to be mixed and that would be to the detriment of women.

I don’t wish to be trawled into a feminist debate but I believe we should stick to all-female or all-male players in a team for competitive football.

Despite equality, and all that jazz, the ability and strength at a professional level of men and women is still very different in many team sports.

In fact, in how many team sports do you see men and women compete against each other equally?

Maybe have a mixed team compete against a mixed team?

It would never work. Period.

Unless you could send out 11 all on theirs, in which case every four weeks you'd have a team ready to tear a new a-hole in anything that gets in their way.

Wouldn't that bring a whole new meaning to singing "You've lost that loving feeling". Not 'alf, pop-pickers.

They score. We sing. They turn on us.
At half-time we all pop out to buy flowers which they then dump upside down in a dustbin.
Next game is played in eerie silence because 'we're not talking at the moment'.

All this would then bring new meaning to "Oh yes, he's married to his football".
No. For the love of God, it must never be allowed to happen.

Out of any position in football, a female keeper playing in the men's league is the most likely. Less need for physicality, stamina and pace, more need for flexibility and agility.

I think it'd be sad though for the best female keeper to end up playing mens football, as it would mean holding back the women's game. The best female players should play in the women's leagues and help boost the appeal of that so that the game further entices young women.

Some very interesting responses on here to this.

Personally I believe no matter how much women's sport is punted by the media it will never be popular unless it involves scantily clad and attractive young ladies.

That being said, we see some appallingly bad goalkeeping across all the divisions and if a female can cut the mustard in League 2 then she should be allowed to play. Her lower centre of gravity and generally better female concentration skills will be a huge asset in goalkeeping and the way keepers are protected today is also in her favour.

Have you ever watched women’s football? Out of all the positions, the keepers are by far the poorest. Even international level women’s keepers would struggle to get in a good Sunday league team, let alone League 2 teams.

The idea is ridiculous. For a start, how many keepers in professional football are under 6 foot? And how many women’s keepers are over six foot? That’s without even mentioning that from what I’ve seen on women’s football, the goal-kicks don’t even reach the halfway line.

This has got nothing to do with equality. Sarah Taylor is a fantastic wicket keeper and has played for Kent 2nd XI. But just watch women’s football - the strength of the shots, the amount of “long-range” goals that go in on the way down (like in kids football) - then tell me a female goalkeeper could genuinely play at even Evo-Stik level in men’s football.

The female sport is still young, so of course it will be littered with errors, goalkeeping ones being the most prominent.

But after a number of years, decades, if any female footballer would make the cut you'd think it would be one in which physical attributes are the least important, and that is in goal.

Nah, no chance. Best bet would be a nippy shortarse attacker, in my opinion. Leonora Messi if you like. In 30 years football will be fully non-contact so I wouldn’t bet against it.

I think you are right about the future being "no contact", the sponsors want attackers to have the edge over defenders to make the game more marketable and they don't want their expensive stars getting injured and missing games.

Yep, f***ing shit innit

If you're good enough then fair dos. At the minute non if them are though.

I don't think women's football will take off here like the states, people are to entrenched in football culture, sure we could pump money into it but it needs to go to grass roots, not to pay for someone's hobby if there's no market for it. I don't like watching shit football so don't watch women, nor do I watch Sandiacre town.

I agree, since women’s first football first came into the limelight, the keeper has always been the weakest position. Often far too short and unable to dive/jump very well, soft shots just sailed over them with ease. It’s odd when you think how good women are at things like gymnastics.

Whenever I catch it now, the keepers seem to be really, really bad still whilst outfield positions have progressed very well. There’s a lot of technically skilful players now.

The women's team in Canada are a good side, and are probably genuinely bigger household names than the men. Certainly true a couple of years back when they were hosting the World Cup. She'd have been making a backwards step.

It’s a dangerous position to be playing when you have grown men flying forward at you.

Just ask Petr Cech.

If that head injury had happened to a female there’d be all sorts of shite arguments and debates to be had that are better worth avoiding.
