Do we need a new keeper?

Just wanted to gauge people's opinions. Seems as though Dougie is desperate to sign a new keeper, surely with Doris as number 1 and DE waiting in the wings this isn't a priority (especially given our financial position). I hate it when managers say thing like " young Dimi isn't quite ready get" really does Dougie know until he's given a game? He's pretty much consigning him to the scrap heap already.. It feels wrong to be overly concerned about this position and not about left back where we don't have anyone (I'm refusing to acknowledge Fox is part of our squad, it makes me sleep better).

I'd rather see Evtimov on loan somewhere getting experience. We should sign an experienced back up who's happy to sit on his arse and collect a wage

DDV should have really been the first choice once he'd signed, but dropping Darlow wouldn't have been a popular move, nor would it have been the sensible outcome for the club since a young English goalkeeper would fetch in a significant fee (which it did). In reality the loan back didn't really help because Darlow wasn't as good last season by a long way and if the rumour of Newcastle wanting him in the team was true it was keeping DDV out of the side when his performances were better.

When we are under embargo and limited on who we can bring in, it would be a bit foolish to sign a new first choice keeper, but we need to loan Evtimov out again to a League 1 club so he can get more experience, as he should be seen as DDV's successor, to do that we'd need a decent reserve keeper who would be cheap and experienced to slot in for a few games if your first choice gets sent off or picks up an injury.

Let's not forget we have the keeper who was key to Swansea's rise up the leagues in our squad.

I was personally shocked when Darlow came back in for De Vries when Freedman came in. Darlow had a tragic end to last season - and I think generally Dorus is a better keeper. Maybe not as good a shotstopper, but much more commanding in his area and extremely good with his distribution - something we have lacked for years from a goalkeeper.

Defenders are calm when you know your keeper is good with the ball and doesn't panic. A big part of last seasons terrible defensive record was partly to due with not having confidence in a goalkeeper in my opinion. If you want to build from the back and play better football - De Vries is the perfect man to start things.

Not to mention, De Vries is a superb professional - I think it will be beneficial to see Evtimov alongside him. The only issue you could think about is that De Vries is rather prone to injury for a goalkeeper, I believe he is having back problems (must be old age). So I can see why we are looking around. Evtimov is still only 21, an age where most goalkeepers haven't made debuts yet, still ahead of his age in my opinion.

Yes I do think we need another experienced keeper as a challenge for the number one spot.

Erlandson and Evtimov are not ready. Several managers and coaches have looked at Evtimov and concluded he isn't ready. He also didn't overly impress when out on loan. The truth is he may never be good enough but I trust the coaching staff who see him day in day out to make a decision on his readiness.

DDV looks a reasonable keeper but he has had problems with injury and he hasn't played consistently week in week out for a few years now. Like many have said I wouldn't have dropped him for Darlow once he had started playing regularly as I thought Darlow had had a mostly poor second half of the season with the odd Hollywood save thrown into the mix.

Dorus is injury prone. Evitmov isn't ready so Dougie needs someone who can provide competition and take over from Dorus if need be.

The guy is glued to his line and if he's first choice next season people will start noticing this and it will be the reason they want him dropped, just like with Paul Smith. He doesn't come for crosses, was slow off his line v Millwall and Sheff Weds (both at home) and dropped a tame cross v Sheff Utd as we all remember. Considering how few games he's played, those mistakes are worrying.

From what I've seen, he's an extremely average and certainly not better than Darlow, who let's not forget made plenty of goal saving stops, especially 1v1s and never really made any huge clangers like we've seen other keepers do often.

I don't really see how a "big part" of our defence being terrible last season was down to not being confident in Darlow... more down to the 7 or 8 inbetween the keeper and forwards defending like absolute shit 99% of the time. As I pointed out not long ago, De Vries only played 6 games I think and didn't keep a clean sheet, letting in nearly 2 goals a game on average.

Point is, there's plenty of good keepers around who would do a decent job and De Vries would do IF the defence was up to scratch. A solid defence and CM will make any decent keeper (eg Lee Camp) look like a world beater. That defence goes and suddenly he looks a little more human. Basically I agree with most people, keeper shouldn't be a priority.

It annoys me too when I hear oh so and so 'isn't ready', well how do you know until you put them in and give them a chance. Was Osborn 'ready' ? when he came in, no probably not,but he came in, performed well and took his chance and continued to improve so much so that now he's almost a first name on the team sheet. I suppose it's slightly different with keepers cos their mistakes are highlighted more but if evtimov isn't gonna make it here then why keep him? And what about this erlandsson? Is he gonna be another evtimov? Always 'one for the future'?

Darlow was solely responsible for a lot of conceded goals this past season. Nowt to do with the defence. If a save requires timing then he's done

Evtimov might not be 'ready' but neither was Darlow until he ended up needing to be played and turned out to be fine.

Dorus is a perfectly good keeper for our level, Evtimov has sufficient promise to push on if selected and Erlandsson is another bright prospect.

It doesn't matter who is in goal if our defence is feckless. Who are we getting for left back?

Very true. The people currently championing him will be the first to turn on him once they realise this. Darlow did fantastically well when he first broke into the team and recieved unanimous praise. As soon as the inevitable slump in form came (that most young players go through) he became a scapegoat. Amazing suppport from the Forest faithful. Osborn will be next.

Unlikely. Every player has an off day but there easier to swallow when the players attitude is right. Osborn sets precedents when it comes to workrate & commitment to the shirt.

Blooding a GK is different to blooding a midfielder. Mistakes and confidence are crucial for keepers. Evtimov has been assessed by several coaches and managers and all so far have been of the opinion he isn't ready. What judgements are you using to say he's ready?

By all accounts his loan spell at Mansfield wasn't overly succesful. Ideally he needs to go on loan again and see how he performs at a lower level.

There have been plenty of so called promising keepers at Forest who have not progressed. Dimi may or may not be in that category. Time will tell.

For me an experienced and quality GK is one of the most important positions on the field. You only have to see what an affect Shilton had on the League/European Cup team. Clough himself said Shilton was the key difference. Now the GK we bring in won't be Shilton but equally for me it's an important position.

Most of the blame was heaped onto Darlow (And to a lesser extent Lascelles) after they'd signed for Newcastle.

I turned on Darlow because he kept making mistake after mistake and pranced around his area like Billy Big Bollox, whilst not claiming crosses, kicking like somebody that has never played football and had his head in the North East. As soon as the new year came, Darlow didn't give a shit.

Depends how you define "need"

DDV can probably do the job, but for how long?

There's definitely a case for trying to bring in a younger GK but they're always the most sought-after and in our current position we're not in the best position to get anyone decent.

Evtimov is the right age but totally unproven and hasn't set the world alight wherever he's been.

Hes been on our books for over 4 years. I appreciate the line is fine, but at what point do you concede he isnt going to contribute at first team level?
