Dean Bradley Henderson

Nottingham's dirty secret
Pickford has been amazing for England.

I still say Henderson is the best English keeper. Maybe a contradiction in terms. But if we secure this bloke's signature we're in a very good place for the next 10 years.

Pickford plays better for England. We can't even say it's because he has better defenders ahead of him, because that doesn't make sense.

He faces world class forwards every week in the Premier League and international level isn't much different.

His mannerisms, facial expressions and shouting really grate on me. Henderson does a lot of the same antics but it doesn't irritate me as much.

Both are great penalty stoppers. I don't think there is much between them in terms of quality but Pickford always raises his game for England.

Pope and Ramsdale are both significantly ahead of Henderson and Pickford, IMO.

Don’t rate Pickford, even for England.

That said I wouldn’t say Henderson is better either. We’ve got a number of ‘good’ keepers, no real standout for me.

If Pickford signs for ManU, then there’s no way he’ll lose his England place.

Henderson won't play for England whilst 50% of his long kicks go out for a throw-in to the opposition.
This is what I didn't like about him mainly. Navas at least kept it in most of the time, even if it seemed his decision to kick it long was tactical rather than technical.

Makes me wonder (assuming the issue with Hendo's going out all the time is tactical other than that he just can't kick) why Hendo's are so bad really. If he's trying the out ball to a winger or full back maybe they need to work more on their shape and the runs they make so it's easier for him to find them, maybe his pacing is just off calibration, or maybe they just need to not do it? With a more progressive on the ball CM like Danilo maybe that is a better option to get the ball quickly out wide.

Any concern that Utd might try to sweeten the desl for Pickford by offering Hendo in part exchange?

I think Henderson would choose us over them in a straight choice but it might be largely outside his hands if Utd favour a deal elsewhere.
I'm not sure Everton could afford Henderson's wages to be honest.

As good as Pickford's record is for England, he still never quite fills me with confidence. While I believe it's true that he's 'never made an error leading to a goal' in his England career, there's been a number of occasions in which he was extremely lucky not to get punished. Against Denmark in the Euros semi he was an absolute bomb scare for example - literally throwing the ball to the opposition on a couple of occasions.

His shouting always strikes me as somewhat performative - like a Poundland Peter Schmeichel - though I obviously aren't privy to how effective it may or may not be with those in front of him.

But again, while I have many concerns, his record remains excellent. Sure, he's got lucky on a number of occasions, but sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

I don't know anything about goalkeeping. Is distribution something that can be coached? Hendo's still pretty young for goalkeeper, isn't he?

I suppose it could be worked on but for me it extends further than just the ability to accurately find someone 30-odd yards away. Can he do it with either foot? Under pressure? Pinging it with a low trajectory or floating one over players? Can he even see the options that are on and have the confidence in making the right choice?

We were spoilt in this regard with Samba but I still maintain that Henderson does the actual fundamentals of goalkeeping much better. Assuming we're under pressure a fair bit next season like we were last season then Henderson is the keeper I'd much rather be there to keep them out.

Problem is if you want both Henderson-level shot-stopping and Samba-level distribution you're basically looking at Ederson 😆. At our level for the budget available it's about prioritising and I'd much rather the keeper was better at keeping the ball out.

Goalkeepers are footballers who aren't good enough to play outfield at a professional level. Pickford supposedly was quite good as a kid and played futsal, so his touch and distribution is better than most. I think Mark Crossley started as a centre-half and didn't start keeping until he was 15, and he was always good with his feet too. That's probably not the case for Hendo or most keepers. I always think that technique rarely improves in any footballer past their teens. They improve physically, can improve positionally, tactically and their decision making gets better and more consistent. Henderson might get a bit tidier but he'll never be a Samba or a Pickford. I think he's a better keeper overall though.

I really didn't think it was a controversial statement by saying goalkeepers aren't particularly good footballers. Pickford's pretty good for a goalkeeper, but he wouldn't be able to play outfield as a professional. Neither would Samba. Or Manuel Nauer. Or Pepe Reina. Or Victor Valdes. Or any other keeper who's quite good with his feet. It's a uniquely specialised position in football, that requires a completely different skill set to an outfield player. While most probably weren't particularly good players, they were/are still probably far better than most ordinary people, but up against the very best in the city, county, region, country, not good enough. Statistically, surely you'd be better off pursuing a career outfield because there's more opportunities. Therefore, if you choose to be a keeper it's got to be because you are significantly better in goal than out of it.

Better ones like Pickford that have a bit more natural footballing ability have an advantage over most of their peers in a small aspect of a goalkeepers game. Being more comfortable on the ball increases the likelihood players and coaches will trust you, so in those formative years it's a skillset that is probably practised and honed more. I suppose what I'm saying is Henderson, at 26, probably won't get much better with his feet. Like Omar said earlier though, we need someone who can keep the ball out the net, and Hendo's as good as we're likely to get (and I'd take him over Pickford for Forest).

I assumed the footballers who played in goal were because they are good at it, not because it's still school and we put the shitters at the back
When I was growing up, my neighbour and good friend of a similar age lived 2 doors away.

He was always the goalkeeper of the street. He was also the smallest out of the Goonies we had on the street. He was just that good with his reactions. Everyone loved trying to beat him and vice versa. He could also play with his feet.

I had an operation on my knee and the day after, he rang my doorbell and still wanted me to shoot balls at him, which I did on crutches. Haha. Things you'd probably never see happen nowadays. Some people just enjoy one thing more than the other. Like most things in life

When I was much younger and playing football properly for the first time(at age 11, mainly because of moving around so frequently) I said I was a goalkeeper because my father had played in that position for his Army side.

After a while I decided I would enjoy playing outfield. No real reason, just didn't enjoy the 'keeper job.

I think it's true what they say about goalkeepers, you need a special sort of mentality as it's a totally different game back there.

Chelsea are making Kepa available. Never hit the heights his transfer fee demanded, but would be a good addition for where we are. Although he's probably wanting to go at a higher level than ourselves.

Then there's that wage though... I can see Chelsea having to subside it at his next club if they want him gone and none of the elite come in for him.
