Current state of the squad

Cooper has said that there will most likely be a few outgoings too.

If I had to guess, I'd say maybe Lyle Taylor and possibly Cafu?
Unless we get a "too big to turn down" offer for someone, I think there's only really 5 names in the conversation - Lyle, Cafu, Colback, Mighten, and Mbe Soh.

Lyle seems like the obvious one to be allowed to leave - we let him go to Birmingham because he wanted more game time, so presumably the same situation applies now we're at a higher level and with more competition for places.

Alex Mighten really needs to go out on loan, a season where he's playing every week like Brennan had at Lincoln would massively help him develop. That also applies for Mbe Soh, but I'm not sure that we can risk letting him go out unless we sign another CB first.

I seem to be in the minority on this, but I think Cafu stays because he can cover a few roles even if he's at best 3rd choice for any of them, and seems to be able to come in after not playing for ages and still be at 100% while maintaining a good attitude about his lack of minutes. Likewise Colback, at least until January when hopefully Richards is back and fully fit.

I'd agree on Cafu, particularly as he's the supportive good-team-mate type, who won't kick up a stink if he barely plays. He's not exactly going to gain a lot from a loan spell either, at this stage of his career. And Colback is a good experienced head to keep in the dressing room.

We’ve built a squad very capable of staying up, now let’s stop buying folk and let Cooper work his magic.

Also, if the unthinkable happens and we do go down this team would absolutely destroy the championship and we would of won that league by Christmas.

With all due respect if they need someone to chat and be a good teammate in the dressing room I'll do it for a lot less than what Cafu and especially Colback are on.

Financially we have clearly gone for it this summer so it makes little sense to keep players around who more than likely won't get near the bench nevermind the pitch. These lads are on good money that we can ill afford to pay just to make up the numbers in training and be a cheerleader on a Saturday. It might sound harsh but it's for the good of their careers and more importantly for the good of NFFC.

The problem is finding someone who will take them on. Colback will fancy himself to still do a job in the Championship so will want more than one year on good money so we may end up subsidising him and Taylor just to get them off the books.

Misses the champ
I think Colback and Cafu will stay assuming they accept being a bit part this season. The way Cafu is around the squad and Coopers trust in him makes me think Cafu the more likely to stay.

I could see Mbe Soh being sold, he's been here a few years now and has not seen a breakthrough, if not sold maybe a loan with an option to buy. We have Cook, McKenna, Worrall, Biancone, Niakhate, Kouyate and even Yates in desperation.

Taylor won't get anywhere near the 25 now we have depth up front so he'll leave. Mighten also won't get ahead of the forwards so a loan for him.

That's not to mention we have always been pretty good at bringing through players from the academy it's why we are where we are so worst case is we prop up the bench with some of our academy if we go through a bit of an injury crisis. So we won't be as light as it seems if we do let these guys go.

Can you also cover midfield? With 9 players on the bench it doesn't take many injuries for a fringe player to find themselves involved again.

We got really lucky with (a relative lack of) injuries last season considering how thin our squad was - I don't want to rely on that happening again.

So who knows how the 25 man squad rule works and who in our squad counts as home grown?
We need to name a 25 man squad once each transfer window closes, and between transfer windows only those 25 named players and U21s can play for us. This season, U21 means anyone born in 2001 or later so Johnson, Mighten, Williams, and Mbe Soh won't count towards the 25 man squad. At this point, we only have 24 senior players at the club and that's including Arter, so it's not a limiting factor in further recruitment.

The homegrown rule is currently even less relevant to us as we're miles away from hitting it, but basically - clubs are only allowed up to 17 non-homegrown players in the 25. Homegrown is defined as having at least 3 years at an English or Welsh team before the age of 21. We currently have either 8 or 9 that are non-homegrown - Biancone, Mangala, Cafu, Niakhate, Kouyate, Freuler, Dennis, McKenna for certain. The one I'm not sure about is whether Awoniyi qualifies or not - he was signed to Liverpool for the requisite 3 years, but spent nearly all of that time out on loan at European clubs.

It would doubtlessly weaken our U-21 side, but a League One/Two loan would probably benefit Dale Taylor significantly.

Still need another LB (thanks to the Richards injury) and one more CB. Garner coming back would be nice too.

Absolutely livid. The lack of transfer activity over the last 24 hrs from us is dreadful. What are Dane and and Marinakis Jnr doing ? They had the opportunity to have at least 20 mins keep and even time to reload the quill with ink. Add to that the selfishness of not giving Talksport any content to talk about it's not a good look for us

We're in real danger of people saying we've had time to help with this settled squad...booooo

For all the crap flying around about all the players we've signed, these light hearted photo digs on twitter did make me giggle.

Tbf thats good but we'd have fewer over-21s than the sheep this season if we hadn't.

GK: Henderson, Hennessey, Smith

RWB: Williams*

LWB: Toffolo, Richards

CB: Worrall, McKenna, Niakhate, Cook, Biancone, Mbe Soh*

CM: Yates, Mangala, Freuler, O'Brien, Kouyate, Colback, Cafu

AM/W: MGW, Lingard, Mighten*

ST: Johnson*, Awoniyi, Dennis, Surridge, Taylor

Bomb: Arter

* = players who don't need to be registered in the 25 man squad.

So with Lodi and potentially Aurier close those signings would take us to 25/25, would expect Taylor and Cafu to be shipped out as a minimum, possibly Colback too? and then perhaps loans for Mighten and Mbe Soh.

Maybe Taylor sold, Mighten out on loan.

Then Richards potentially not registered for the first half of the season.

That would leave three open I think after Lodi.

I’d like to keep Cafu, but you never know.

Update with 6 hours to go and assuming Bade goes through…

GK: Henderson, Hennessey, Smith
RWB: Williams*
LWB: Toffolo, Richards, Lodi
CB: Worrall, McKenna, Niakhate, Cook, Biancone, Mbe Soh*, Boly, Bade
CM: Yates, Mangala, Freuler, O'Brien, Kouyate, Colback, Cafu
AM: Lingard, Gibbs-White
ST: Johnson*, Awoniyi, Dennis, Surridge, Taylor

Bomb: Arter

* = players who don't need to be registered in the 25 man squad.

So that’s 29 currently at the club but three of them are U21 so that makes 26. It’s possible that Niakhate won’t be registered so that leaves 25.

So if we are in for a right back then they either need to be young or someone has to leave but that can’t be Mbe Soh. I wonder whether it might be Cook out and a right back in and possibly even a striker in with Taylor out. And if Niakhate is going to be registered then maybe Colback out too.

Interesting.

Wouldn't be surprised if Richards doesn't get registered. He won't be available for many games prior to the World Cup break, and we have Lodi and Toffolo at LWB so registering him feels a bit pointless.
